Does any one have any opinions about nannys for youngstock?
EG number of youngstock per nanny, are they necessary or would you keep a herd of youngstock on their own, mixed ages or same age group.

I have one outstanding nanny, who does the job for youngstock, injured stock and barmy stock.

She is 27 yrs old 12hh section A mare who has done everything from Hoys herself, her stock have gone to Hoys, she has had numerous foals and she is a right madam, I have the bruises on my knees to prove it. If I upset her she bites my knees and if she can't get my knees she has my backside as I shut the door.

It doesn't matter how many she has to look after or how big, they cross her at their peril. My 17.2 hunter asks permission to speak to her, my yearling makes an appointment and the 10 month old part shire made the mistake of not making an appointment and paid the price.

She stands over them when the babies sleep, but she will also play with them which is lovely to see. She is very sprightly and can out sprint the yearling filly.

Her name - Moon Fairy, and long may she reign, total god send.

I use a retired broodmare to be a nanny, I've used different ones over the year and they have all been great (I make sure to use one that comes when its called and is easily caught.:D). Their experience seems to make sure that they put up with most of what the youngsters do and reprimand them if they get too bold. I find putting the nanny with the yearlings for a few days before they join the main group of youngstock means that they have a protector when they join the older lads and stick with her until they are brave enough to deal with them. I find that most of the retirees love the job and treat the yearlings as their babies. I also use an older gelding for the job, hes bone idle so wont gallop with anything you want to keep quiet.
