I LOVE whoever came up with this. Such a fantastic idea, pack the poultice material into the foot, pop a nappy over the top and wrap it in vetwrap. Bob's your uncle and Fanny's your aunt.

Our foal has a hoof abscess that is currently being poulticed and having this nappy trick makes it all a lot quicker, so he doesn't have to hold his foot up for as long. He seemed to find it very comfortable too so will be keeping some nappies in my first aid box from now on! :)

I have had a spell of bad leg ulcers this year (due to a welly boot accident!) and nappies also make the most wonderful soft and pliable outer dressing. My nurses think its an amazing idea as it keeps the wounds dry so they heal faster.

101 uses for a disposable nappy #2!!

I also use these, my girl's great big clodhoppers are size 4! They're made specifically for the job I reckon, never mind babies' bums.

I've got a pack of 20 nappies in my first aid... still to be opened, but there if and when needed!!!
Others think I've got a fettish with nappies!?! lol (Had my babies, and will have no more)

Still got an open pack in my first aid , havent used them for years but they are better than anything else - did get a few odd looks in my local co-op as the girls know i'm not , or never will be having babies , but got even more quizzical looks when i told them they were to put on horses feet.

Yip , nappies are great for this
Sanitary pads make great non stick wound pads and are way cheaper.
Ive not found a use for nipple shields, but give me time !!

Great for washing wounds where cotton wool tends to leave bits behind. Also great for applying ointment to ouchy places, put ointment on pad, place on wound - dressing now stuck there and you can then bandage without losing the ointment.

I have a plastic box full in my first aid kit.

Also useful to use as padding for bandages are hand towels. I buy them in bulk from our local warehouse, folded in half they are the right length for leg wraps.

i wish i could do this with my mare:rolleyes: she chews them off grrr... last time we had stuff for poultice, nappy, vetwrap, plastic bag, vetwrap, sock then bandage and duct tape round the foot! sounds quite cruel:( but only way we could keep it on lol

Always Ultra is a good one too....poor horse, I think his mates in the field all laughed at him last winter when he was drudging around with one on his foot to heal an abscess!

Pardon my ignorance. but how the heck do you fit a nappy to horses foot? The middle bit is narrow and has pleats in it, is that the part that goes underfoot? I would imagine stuff vanishing in the pleats etc.

There is some secret to it, "cos you all seem so enthusiastic about them. Could you please share, Very interesed in economical tips. (Not for feeding, some things are sacred) :) Makes sense to save where one can. Thanks.

If you have a problem with the shape then just cut the elasticated bit out and you are left with a flat pad.

They're great for poultices, my auntie whose mare has been prone to abcessess did get a few strange looks when someone in the shop asked her how big the baby was and she had to explain they weren't for a baby!

Nappies rock- I too have a packet in my First Aid.

Slightly off topic but when my husband was a Medic in the Army in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan he use to carry a packet of Lil-lets around with him and they were perfect for gunshot wounds! Individually wrapped so sterile they expanded to the the entry wound to form a seal- genius! Hopefully we will NEVER need this for our horses though!

When I purchased "The Rosie Monster" back in 2008 she had three foot absesses in a row! Her hooves are like man hole covers, but in Asda they sell "aged 4 and up" nappies!!! Was rather embarrassing buying them and I did get some comments from mums saying my kid should be out of nappies at that age! When I told them they were for my horse, they slowly backed away from me lol! Stupid cows!

Heavy horse + big arsed kid nappies + duck tape = Happy horsey :)
