Would you have a horse that naps? Im looking for an allrounder and have rung up about a horse but have been told that he if your not firm with him he will nap. Im not sure about this myself so I thought Id ask you. Ignore the bucking part on this thread. I think thats a no no too having had a bucker that did handstands bucking is out of the question.

Why buy a horse that naps when there's plenty that don't?

Bad manners, why haven't they schooled him out of it? Why/when does he nap? Could be any number of physical problems. I'd steer clear.

wouldn't bother me in the slightest, doesn't take much to sort out.

Sometimes, but not always. Some horses just need a bit of confidence - leg on and some encouragement as soon as they hesitate and on you go.

Others are more tricky. I've sat on a rearing, plunging, spinning warmblood on a motorway bridge a fair few times before we sorted our napping issues. I did sort it out - in the 12 years I rode him he didn't even hint at napping with me for about 11. But put a nervous rider on him, or anyone who hung on to the reins, and he'd start up.

I'd find out exactly what the horse does, and (if you can) why he does it. Within reason I might take on a horse that napped out hacking. A horse that naps in the school or going to the school, on the other hand, I'd think twice about. Most horses like hacking once they realise they do have to go but nothing will eat them - while a horse that has been soured in the school can be very hard to put right.

Of course, it could be a physical issue, and would be worth mentioning at the vetting (and I would definitely have him vetted).

Good luck!

I would think a lot of horses would nap if they didn't have a confident rider on board, particularly if you had just purchased them taking them away from familiar riders, horses and surroundings. I can't think of many that I know that wouldn't nap if given a chance. Fair play for the seller to be honest about a horses' shortcomings. But depends on the severity of the napping of course!

as previously mentioned, could be many reasons for napping/ bucking.

Confidence, tack, bad back etc. Then there are just those that are teasy stubborn little sods.

It would not bother me in the slightest, but then I like a project and a challenge, I never like to buy the finished article, I like to create it for myself. So it really depends on what you are looking for in a horse, what you are prepared to compromise on, what you can deal with etc.

How severe the napping is, does it include spinning around/bucking/rearing?? Or is it a 'nope, not going to move an inch for 5 minutes sort of thing'??

"If you're not firm with him".....
So basically, it's a horse that tries it on and occasionally takes the p*ss. What horse doesn't do that? He might require a firmer hand, but it's up to you to decide how much the other qualities in him can be seen as a redeeming factor.

IE a horse can be an amazing performer in the ring and a sod if you take it out on a hack. For me; I'm not a big hacker so it wouldn't bother me. But someone that would want to hack regularly, it would bother because it would void a massive part of riding for them.
