Sorry, went AWOL! Thank you all for your suggestions. Twiggy, he is a 17.2 threequarter bred, quite narrow and not heaps of bone.

He got behind some electric tape and pulled down a length of post and rail a couple of weeks ago, whether he stood on a nail then. I have spoken to farrier but he said if digs more he will have to take the hoof wall off which will mean he will need shoes on. So, we are trying a few more days. Farrier suggested peroxide - thoughts?
I also thought if no major improvement on Monday will maybe get vet out to xray.
I poulticed for 5 days, he went sound, went to dry poultices, fine. Then two days later to no poultice and he went lame again and is a bit lame now but weight bearing.
(Ignore my earlier reply when I said I started poulticing on a Friday, that was a lie, I rarely know what day of the week it is!).
