Someone posted on a nappy horse thread about using a bottle with pebbles in to get theirs going forward. I tried this today with a bit of success, after sitting in a lane covered in flies for a hour with horse refusing to move. BUT when you used it poster did you have someone behind you using the bottle or did you ride with it ? Actually used a Pringles container with coins in, as thought glass bit risky, but had to take hands off reins to use it, then when we got going it jingled all the time! Bit scary ride. ! Need to rethink.Took me 3 hours to do 90 min ride today.

Interesting idea - not sure I would want to use it for my napper - would scare her senseless - she would definitely go forward but not sure if it would help with her confidence issues!

Have you tried a wip *** or the reins over the shoulders? I use it as a last resort and generally only have to pick up my reins and she moves off! Obv I have no idea what problems you have so ignore me if you like!

I would assume the bottle in question would be a plastic one - like a coke bottle full of small pebbles? and then just shake it as and when needed??

Try a whip *** rope! Just take the clip off an old lead rope, double it up and knot the end. Hold the knot end and if they refuse to move swing it back and forth over front of saddle hitting them behind the saddle. You can swing it really quickly and it doesnt hurt like a whip but i find it gets the reaction of them going forward as they dont know where its coming from next. Worked a treat with my boy when he was being a git;)

Good idea for the alternative to the whipwhop I think I will give that a try, the pebbles may also be good for shocking him forwards I don't really mind how fast mine goes forward as long as it moves.

I have tried a whip with mine after exhusting other options trying to shock him out of rearing and the first time it worked but after that it just made him worse by bucking and becoming a little frantic.

There doesn't seem to be any simple answer does there so I think almost anything is worth a try. Good luck.

I have an "interesting" repertoire of noises I can make, including a shrill BRRRRRRRRR!!!!!! that sends most horses scuttling forward.... Saves hands off reins with bottle, although the pebbles do work. Shaking pebbles/coins at door bangers and horses that paw the ground also pretty effective!
Turning round and backing up in the onward direction works pretty well too....

Hi, i have used the pebbles and it workd for me. Last year my boy was really bad. Hes quiet a backward thinking horse and was very laid back. I found it better to have someone on the ground with them. Yot do have to be ready thou when someone does shake them. His napping was just been plain naughty. I could sit there all day. I tried all sorts even people galloping passed me, but he still would just stand there, i used to feel a right idiot. You need to be patient too. He out grew it in the end he was 4 and a half at the time. Im careful who i ride out with incase he decides to try it again. I used to have to use them to get him in the trailer too otherwise he would stand at the bottom of the ramp larfin at you. The whipwop never worked for me. You could try tying a carrier bag to the end of a long schooling whip and wave that at him. Good luck.

Wip *** doesnt work neither does anything else! It has got to the stage I have advertised him for sale but trying to improve him as much as poss. Previously posted extensively re this napping problem under alicemary, but changed name cos I got fed up of having to type it in every time as cant seem to save log in in my pc.shorter now !
I expect the coins wont work next time either as he does catch on to things pretty quick.
Am covered in mozzie bites now that I got whilst sitting it out in the lane!
