When you were a kid could you remember many horses that napped? It's just that none of my ponies ever did and they had plenty of opportunity to do it and it just seems to be a lot more Nappy horses around nowadays.

Also how many different names are there for napping nowadays? I think Herd Bound is my favourite.

!! Never heard that before!

My pony used to Napp, however I just used to call it a napping little BASTARD!!!
It was always before we went into the ring to SJ! they just so know the little gits!

my old pony (about 2002/3 when i had him) used to nap- when he wanted to he couldnt half jump and was so fast against the clock, he won alot of money sj, but somedays he just didnt feel like it and napped like mad (spinning/rearing!), and wouldnt do xcountry unless it was just schooling with no other horses!

You are probably right- in the old days if it napped as a 3 year old it would get a kick up the b*m and sent forwards, I think we are getting softer and in some respects it is having a negative effect.

Before I get shot down- I am about as soft as they come (probablly too soft) and my horses are spoilt rotten. I do not beat my horses! This is purely an observation

I remember riding ponies that napped - we were taught to give them a bloody good kicking and telling off and yes, use a whip!!! it was called "sheer bloody mindedness"

LOL!

Well my old mare napped like no tomorrow, if she couldnt rear spin or backtrack her way home she would just lay down.

Current older boy who should know better at 17 was sold by previous owner at 5 for napping 2 miles home with her. He can still try it now now and again now but its nothing that a good smack with the whip doesnt cure LOL. He was at a yard at 5 to be 'fixed' for his napping, just needed some ahem, discipline.

My newest boy isnt nappy at all and I find it bizarre because Ive gotten so used to having horses that napped its like Im astonished when he doesnt do it! Such a good boy!

my very lsat pony, in 1984 (yup, im an oldie) napped like bu%%ery when she saw the neighbours goats......ruined a lot of my riding and i could only get her by them if i led her. never gave it a name but it was a damned nuisance.

daughters horse could nap for britain and we give it some very blue names! however, she has now got to grips with it so look out showjumpers in sw scotland!!

she'll hate me for that lol

sorry peeps :P

Very few horses napped 25 years ago. If it napped it got hit and it didn't generally do it again. Had two nasty nappers at the dealers yard here I worked, one which only napped going into the ring, and then when you got it there it would get itself eliminated at the 1st fence, absolutely smashing pony & a real shame. Other one came in with the same consignment from Northampton market, put previous owner in hospital a number of times, mum bought it for #50, ended up just short of JA nd going to the PC champs. Mind you I did have to beat it solidly for four days to get it off the yard when we first had it.
I think there are lots of reasons - on the whole in the old days far less numpties owned horses, far less horses did endless schoolwork - mostly we hacked (& considered whether the horse might actually enjoy it's life), finally there were very few warmbloods. Though I did used to ride a proper old fashioned hannoverian in 1981 and he didn't have a nappy bone in his body.

My 12.2hh pony and 14hh pony both napped at start of xc I can remember mum waving her coat like a loony to get them to start. The 14hh did get better after a seasons hunting! In fact the 14hh napped all the time until he hunted he was sick of everything when we had him as had been over shown.

We had a shetland that would only go in the direction of home, so we used to lead her out to where we wanted to go and then get on and go home at about 100mph! Most of my ponies and horses napped at some point, I put it down to mostly having to straighten out other folks messes!!!

I still live by this method (call me cruel) my nf was a nightmare when i first got him but after a few cracks with the whip and never giving in to him, he is now an angel to ride.

Yes....i remember many of my horses (and ponies) used to try it on briefly....they all soon learned that it was futile

I never had a pony that napped when i was younger. Bloss was the first 'napper' i had to deal with, that was 5 years ago now when i first had her.

I seem to remember a few horses from years ago that where major Rearers, Nappers & bolters they got hit & it made them even more dangerous. Then the no nonesense people would load it on a lorry & flog it for what they could.

I like 'Herd Bound' lol will remember that lol

My first pony napped coming from the field, just used to stand up and wave her front legs at you. A lunge whip soon sorted that out, and she never tried it again....
It was a good education.
Edited to say - That is not to say we beat the s##t out of her, just kept her moving and she then knew who was boss.
(just reread and noted I didn't put that too well)

I just wonder whether the influx of natural horsemanship methods has created nappy horses.

you've answered your own question!!!

or far too many inexperienced people over horsing themselves.

I don't think you can blame this one on NH

Much more inclined to go with your second option though
