My competent 12 year old daughter is having is a few problems with our ISH mare who has become nappy when leaving the arena in an eventer challenge comp, or leaving the start box for XC. She is in great health and super fit so there's no reason for her to do it - except her desire to stay with the other horses. We do everything we can think of (spending minimal time in the warm up etc) and have done SO much work to get her feeling more secure. She isn't very good at hacking alone and becomes spooky and fairly strong-minded if she decides it's more fun back at the yard with her buddies.

I'm considering putting her on magnesium (someone recommended Regumate but I don't think she needs that), she is a wonderfully good-hearted mare and is such a joy in almost every other way so we're keen to make this work. Has anyone had experience of similar problems - she isn't a typical mare but her seasons do seem erratic so I wonder whether a supplement may balance her hormones and give her more confidence/focus. Would be grateful for any thoughts.

Have a look at Agnus Castus, it is the main ingredient in a lot or hormonal supplement and works well for my nappy mare.

Regumate is nasty stuff and only to be used if really necessary! The vet can advise you but you have to be very careful and I definitely wouldn’t let your daughter administer or feed it to the horse or let her handle the buckets etc as it can interfere with human hormones! You have to wear gloves and be super careful with it, we had ours on a 2-3 week trial under vet supervision and I was the only one able to handle the liquid or buckets.

Oestress is great stuff I’d try that first!

May also be worth a bit of brewers yeast in the feed. If they get anxious/nappy , it can sometimes be from the stomach acid sloshing about if they’ve slowed on eating.

Super cheap . I feed 1/4 a little scoop. It can be a game changer as it binds the stomach acid if they don’t eat for a while. Bit like we can get acid reflux with anxiety.
