The mare I ride for my part time job is lovely, but then today she has just changed.
She was rearing on the yard and would not go out of the yard gate to get the the arena.
I tried being nice and calm, then tried being firmer, nothing worked...... she was standing her ground, going up, spinning, just generally napping and was so so not having any of it!

Any one got any ideas how to work through it?
If I got off and walked by her head she was fine, when I got back on, it all started again, then the yard manager came over and walked by her head and she was fine again.............

Im unsure as to whats caused it etc! please? anyone ideas?

a sudden change normally means that there's an experience of pain/discomfort somewhere, so I'm sure I won't be the only one saying check your horses tack, including the fit of your girth, saddle, polypad, bit, etc... then do check her teeth, neck & back muscles, limbs, and her diet, environment and routine, also try and figure out if she's normally a seasonal mare - might not expect it at this time of year but with the warm weather its'a possibility,

check EVERYTHING you can think of, get a vet/physio if necessary. If you're still unsure, give her a few days and try with another rider and see if they get the same reaction,

hope you find the problem

I'd love to know too, as my boy is showing the occasional sign of doing this too. In fact, I don't give much for my chances of getting him off the yard without a fight on Saturday. He's never actually reared, not with me anyway, but I wouldn't put it past him to have a go if pushed!

Peacelily, that is what I thought, however, when we got to the school, she went better than last time I rode her.... so was not sure.

However after riding her, I washed her off with warm water and when I did between her back legs, she cocked her tail slightly......... which made me go........ hmmm season possibly? but same as you didnt htink it was really the right time..... but could be I guess, not as though weather can make up its mind or anything!

Think the vet is coming next week, so will check everything again tomorrow.
It just makes you a bit nervous when a normally lazy, chilled out, bomb proof horse suddenly goes like this.
Daffodil, ye same here. She has reared with 2 others, but that was them holding her mouth too tightly (Im very light in my hands, which is apparently why she likes it). However she has never done it with me. She has never even been nappy with me..........
ARGH frustrating!

we had problem with an old mare and it was her teeth. when the dentist let me feel her teeth, they nearly cut me as they were so sharp. Her checks were sore as well because of this.
