Nappy mare

I own an 8 year old warmblood mare. She is extremely talented and very gentle and polite to handle. However, recently she wont even hack out without stopping, planting and rearing up. This has resulted in eliminations at cross country when previously she was fine. She has had everything checked and she is fine, she has had no bad experiences. We are running out of things to try, being gentle doesn't work and neither does getting angry. We are going to put her on a hormonal supplement but does anyone have any ideas or the same problem? I would love to hear anything!

trying a hormonal supplement sounds like a good idea. if she has always been fine before, the rider is the same (and has not lost confidence), her tack fits and she has not had anything happen that may have scared her then i suggest another work up by the vet or speak to the vet about trying a bute trial.

we had a horse at work that i said was lame and that what we were told on vetting was not an 'asymmetrical pelvis', vet did not agree, then horse started dirty stopping when show jumping (never stopped x country), vet again disagreed horse was lame-6 months later and another vet agreed horse was lame and scanned hips to show pelvis was not a symmetrical but an abnormal muscle development (4 vets at this point had said it was asymmetrical) they ended up opening the stifle and finding a 3rd degree ligament tear and a horse that would have been in terrible pain at take off as he sat back on his hocks-the adrenalin xcountry and being less on his hocks had meant he never stopped doing that, poor lad so honest-he is now a happy hacker that is a very good doer we always struggled to put weight on him and it must have been due to constant pain.

sometimes things are missed and maybe it needs looking into further or with a fresh pair of eyes

Have you tried a couple of low level events, where you can do pairs competitions? Might just help with her confidence.

Same issues!! 15 year old warmblood mare, one day fine next day, rearing bunny hopping napping spooking! Its nightmare! Please if you find a solution tell me! X
