good morning

my 13 yr old tb x id mare who we have had for six years with no probs has developed over last few days a snotty nose , its only one side yellow in colour and runny , her temps normal she looks well , shes not ridden due to djd and is in field waiting to come in season and go to stud ( or she was!) i brought her in last night as the discharge has worsened , will consult my vets this morning , any ideas? all the articles i can find on here note discharge out of both nostrils , so i,m a bit stumped

I would ask the vet to come out and screen, blood screen for strangles asap and tell your yo that is what you are doing, meanwhile keep eye out for temp and also for any swelling under the jaw, lymph nodes area.
Good luck and keep me posted bless her, my pony has just had it.

vet came out , ruled out anything infectious , gave mare danilone and strep for 5 days , its sinusitis , but we have to wait till follow up visit weds to find out whats causing it , she will be scoped then , they suspect an infected molar but could be a number of things , darnit , she may need referal to an equine clinic for facial x rays etc

hate to be the bearer of horrible news, but my elderly mare started like this about 2/3 weeks ago, and unfortuantely i lost i last tuesday. she did however come up with massive swellings around her throat that made it difficult to breate and she had a traceoctomy to help - troubles developed from there. just be cautious and keep an eye on her.

Hi. How's your mare doing? My gelding had what sounds like exact symptoms to your mare a few weeks ago. The vet diagnosed synisitus. The discharge from the nose was quite thick and discoloured and only on one side. It also started to smell pretty bad! Which to me said there was an infection present. Got the vet back and my gelding was put on a course of antibiotics. Had the dentist out on wed for the usual check and he found a massive fracture in a tooth, which is what affected his synuses. Got to go for x-rays and to the opertaing table in a couple of weeks to have the tooth removed. V. nervous about it due to the complications. But it might be worth getting the dentist to look at your mare to see if they can find anything. Good luck!!!
