Has anybody had this done to their horse? My horse is due to have this done next week and am worried sick.

He had a tooth out at christmas via a hole in his sinus and has had 3 sinus infections and now it seems he has another one. He also has a cement plug in the tooth socket to fill the space between the sinus and his mouth, my worry is that this has come out or he has a gutteral pouch infection.

Hi hun - my horse Sunny gets Summer Pasture Allergy and was quite ill last August. He was scoped so we could see what was happening in his chest. The scope goes up the horse's nose and down into the top part of his lungs so not quite the same as your ned's sinus flush but very similar. I took Sunny to the vets but then refused to stay to watch him being scoped as I thought it would be a horrific, medieval procedure where 6 hefty assistants would have to hold Sunny down and shove this humungus tube up his nose. Well, there you go. Wrong again! They dragged me back to see the scope inside his chest and even though Sunny is such a gent about things that you could probably saw his leg off with a rusty carving knife while he finished his tea, the process was very calm and not in the least stressful for him. He was lightly sedated and was put in the crush. Scope up his nose caused a bit of sneezing but he dozed through most of it and I think he was quite surprised when his dozing was interrupted by being taken out of the crush and put back on the trailer! Try not to worry hun and whatever you do, don't let your horse feel your panic or you'll make him panic too. It's simple, painless and your vets will have done it a thousand times. And at the end of the day it's being done for the benefit of your horse's health so it has to be done. It'll be fine, scout's honour x

Hi there, thank you for your reassuring and postive post. I needed to hear that. Did they find a cause for Sunny's problem? I hope he is better now. I get worked up enough when my horse travels, but will concentrate on remaining calm for his sake as he now gets worked up too, last time he was covered in sweat and he had soaked the inside of the lorry too as he was steaming so much. Thank you so much x

Racehorses get scoped every month just using a twitch. My horse was scoped twice last year with a mild sedation. She was not at all concerned. Remember when they are sedated it makes them sweat, so don't be concerned about that aspect of the procedure.

My horse has had 3 scopes in the last month. We thought she had a sinus infection - she was scoped at my vets - showed nothing apart from the pus, but no indication of where it was coming from. Tooth x-rays were fine. She went back after a fortnight - scoped again - still no indication of where snot was coming from - guttural pouch clear. She then had a trephine put in - they drill a small hole into the head and look into the sinus. I was horrified by the thought, but she was sedated and then local anaesthetic was put into the area. This was so they could look directly into the sinus. After another week, there was still one sided snot, so horse was referred to Edinburgh. Scoped/trephined/x-rayed again - x-rays were much better here and showed something wrong in one of the sinuses. Anyway, to cut a long story short, they found a cyst in her sinus. She has been operated on through her face and I pick her up next week. Apparently the mucus was collecting behind the cyst and becoming infected, so the antibiotics couldn't clear it as it couldn't drain anywhere. Don't worry about it. I was worried, but then found myself watching in fascination and even having a look up the scope.
The horse will be sedated and mine didn't even react....
