My mare tripped and nearly fell twice in the jump off caused by her new Veredus overreach boots turning while in use and the carbon fibre part getting in her way. She was very lucky not to come down. The first time I managed to stay on, the second time I was fired out of the saddle in her desperate attempts to stay upright. She couldn't get her feet at all on landing and on inspection the boots had turned so that the carbon fibre heel bulb was to the side. They were on firmly and this was only the second time I had used them so were not really stretched or anything.

I can't believe they have not tested for something like this. I thought they were meant for jumping in. I will certainly never be using them again!

I was looking at getting some of those! So glad I didn't

So sorry to hear of your pain and angst

.

How did they manage to turn though? I've looked at them again (on the web, as said, I don't have any), and I can't see how they' twist

The Dizzy one has Professional Choice overreach boots and they haven't moved despite her shenanigans.

Hope you and ned are okay!

No idea. The way the carbon shield sits firmly on the heel bulbs should stop them, and I've never had my Mark Todd no-turn ones turn either. They were firmly on and to put them any tighter would have been restrictive. As it is, you have to pull the bottom, elasticated tie quite hard to get it to hook on. It was quite horrible, she tripped twice so badly her head just dissappeared from under me, we were going fast in a jump off too. She did very well to stay on her feet.

I dont ever put overreach boots on my horses, since jumping XC and the horse trod on the back of the boot on landing, we both somersaulted as in the time it took the boot to rip she could not move her front legs out the way and tripped over them.

I have since found out this is the reason a lot of people dont wear them.

Glad you are both ok.

Definitely contact the manufacturers, they really do need to made aware of what happened.

Since we started getting the designs put together for our new range of boots I looked into what testing needs to be done before they can be launched. I'm amazed to say the answer is none at all. So you could sit at your kitchen table and come up with a new design and the first time it sees a horse is when the first customer buys them!!

There are some moves in the industry, led by one of the big manufacters, to test boots for impact/how much they heat the leg etc so that a rating can be given. But I don't believe any of the proposed tests actually use a horse. Have to say it seems unlikely these standards will ever come into force though as so many manufacturers are scared that their 'best sellers' will come out with poor results. Shame though.

Anyway I am rambling! So glad you are both ok

I hope your alright im guessing by your location your were at snec i saw something like that happening as i was warming up it made me cringe

I had N.E.W ones and they also turned around. I now go for the shortest length so that they just cover the bulb of the heal. It's a hard decision as I've heard of horses tripping on them but also seem some pretty bad overreach injuries. Hope you are ok.

Very glad nobody was hurt but if you are using the boots that I think you are then they are piaffe protection boots not jumping boots as far as I am aware. Chances are if you call the manufacturer they will explain that the boots are not designed to jump in

They will be the jumping one's veredus do both the Piaffe overreach (the shield) and the jumping one (the carbon shield). I use the the carbon Shield to school my dressage horses in on the flat.

looked the catalogue and this is what it says about them.

Yip as I said I didn't realise the carbon shield range was a separate line to the piaffe collection

Nothing new there then

bit like cars, amazing how many recalls there are for things, I always remember the recall for Bentleys, they were about £250,000 I think, some ridiculous price anyway, they were recalled for "danger of speedometer cable getting wrapped around steering column"

jeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzz, it's not like it was a Trabant at £500.00

Yes, you are right, it was me at the BSJA show at SNEC! I was really lucky but my horse nearly came down, twice, in a jump off, turning and jumping at speed, because of these boots. Fortunately she is a very sure footed, careful mare who does everything she can to avoid falling or hitting anything. I couldn't think what had happened as she just literally dissappeared from under me on landing then lurched up again. I took the boots off and she is such a good mare, despite being unnerved, she went in and jumped a clear round in the next class.

As also said, they are advertised for all disciplines. I will be contacting Veredus but I suspect they will say I had them on wrong or something. Honestly I did'nt, and how perfect do you need them to be to avoid the danger? Can everyone using them guarantee them being done up to the perfect tension or tightness every single time they are used? To me, I had them pretty damned tight on and they should not have spun. The problem is, with the carbon shield, once it has moved, its so big and bulky, it gets in the way. She either hit it with her other leg or couldn't bend her fetlock, I don't know which. And both boots turned, not just one!

I felt I should tell people what happened on here, because its a serious accident waiting to happen!

Sounds really nasty.

I've got to admit, I've given up with OR boots now, I've had too many turn/come off, etc over the years. For all the issues they have caused, I've not had one since taking them off.

At least she went in and jumped well in the next class

my boy would have freaked if that happened to him he fell over at a workin hunter show and its taken since last summer to get him to go over them again dont think i could have taken a fall like that either it looked sore
