A certain person at my yard has always directed negative comments towards my horse, and while she is nice normally, I have been told things like "He reminds me of a pikey horse" on quite a regular basis.

Yesterday a girl I am friends with came to the yard to ride him, she is considering loaning him when I am at uni, and this person came marching over, pressing his sides and saying things like "Got any ribs in there?" and telling me he was fat

as well as ugly.

Anyway, to the point. This person has said such things since I've been at the yard, but yesterday, perhaps because it was in front of my friend who is thinking of loaning him, it really got to me and I felt an inch high.

1st pic is last Summer, 2nd pic is *i think* in January 08. He looks more like the second pic at the moment.

It really upset me, I feel I have done well with my first horse and I am pretty sure he is quite a nice weight?? Honest opinions please. I'm not bothered about the 'ugly' comment as I think he is gorgeous, but I am worried about the fat comment.

PS He is fed 1 feed a day of a scoop and a half of hi-fi lite with oil, salt and succulents, plus 2 small handfuls of spillers fibre cubes in his ball, but he doesn't get the ball in Summer. He's out all day on grass (crap grass at the moment though) and I give him enough hay to have a bit left over in the morning, or a big haynet of haylege, depending on what the yard is feeding. I have weighed him with the weigh tape and he weighs about 510kg.

As missshell said ignore her!! She obviously don't have a clue he is not fat at all. He looks very well!!

How bloody rude... Have the confidence to say back to her that he is just how YOU want him which is all that matters to you.

IMO, he's a good weight for his type and very handsome too

He's a cob!! He looks lovely. The person is just a nasty piece of work. What would he look like slimmer? Like he needs to put weight on!.
I have a cob. I took him to a show one week, the judge said he needed to lose 1/2 a ton of weight and placed thoroughbred type horses. The next week he was placed first and i was told he was in excellent condition! Takes all sorts. Your horse is lovely, be proud and well done with your first horse. Jealosy makes some people not nice.

Despite my loathing of anything cross bred, I forced myself to look at these pictures, just for you

He looks fine to me - but is a solid boy, with a deep girth - and many, more novice horse people mistake depth of girth, or large ribcages for fat. I have a TB with a deep girth...and even when she's been run up too light, after illness, my YO and liveries have said 'Ha ha look how fat'....when I ask them how they condition score, they look at the depth of the girth (which they call 'fat belly' sigh).
They also don't seem to get that poorly horses with a fat stomach are actually wormy...not fat either....

Now I just agree with them (but secretly add them to my 'idiots' file

I think green eyed monster springs to mind to describe why this so called girl has said things like that.

What has she got a skinny thoroughbred she can't keep weigth on.

I love cobs and in the first pici he does seem to have a bit of a neck on him which is probably grass and would keep eye on it for this summer but I certainly wouldn't say he massively over weight. Second pici he's just right IMOA he has good muscle and has lovely markings far, far from ugly. He has good large bone and would look silly thin. Your doing a good job and tell her to go eat celery stick. I'd be well pleased if he were mine and looked as good as in pic 2 so good on you. He's beautiful.

I think he looks super, and you have him nicely turned out in the second pic too (I love hogged manes!). She is probably either jealous, or very insecure and makes herself feel better by directing negative comments towards you.

Ignore her! He is lovely.

Let me guess this girl has a skinny TB type?
Ignore her she obviously doesn't know a good looking cob when she sees one. He looks fine weight wise. These cobs shouldn't look lean or skinny.

Thank you Mooch, he's 15hh.

Thanks everyone, I feel like I can breathe again now. I got myself so wound up about it. I may just print this off and show it to her next time

I think he's beeee-ooooo-tiful.

I'm a sucker for a nice proper cob. And that's what he is - a proper, deep girthed, wide cob. Not fat just appropriate for his type.

So many people are anti-cob.

Mine got referred to as 'that cobby-thing' the other day. We took no notice and carried on being short, wide and deep! (well, he did - I stuck with tallish and wide!!

Thank you IrishCobs. Sort of, her children have BSJA ponies. Little competition fit things. She doesn't seem to see that I wouldn't want a horse like that. Couldn't go for a 4 hour plod on one of them could I?

Well if he is a 'pikey horse' then them pikeys muct have a fair bit of money. Do they have no idea of the money horses of your type are going for these days!? And as for his weight, i think he looks fine.

Your horse looks exactly as he should do for his type - he is a gorgeous boy in good condition - and I wouldn't mind betting that when it comes to the ugly stakes, this horrid person would beat him by a mile!

I think he is looking good - very handsome boy. My mum calls my Irish mare that 'pikey' thing. I like my Irish bog mare - she's cool! Some people just don't go for that sort of thing, but I think he looks great! I want one! (oh...I already have one...)

Hes beautiful - she is not normally nice - a nice person does not treat anyone like that and she obviously has huge insecurity problems herself!
