Asti was fine when I left the farm at lunch time but by the time I got back at 5 she'd cut her eye - no idea how as field is all electric.

I've washed it in a sterile saline wash, and have left them out tonight so she can't rub it or get shavings in it in the stable.

The eye itself doesn't seem to be damaged, and the swelling is her eyelid. I'm doubting this could be stitched. Is it safe for me to put some type of cream on or would you keep it clean and let it heal itself?

As long as you are sure her eye is fine then I keep it clean and dry. I wouldn't put cream on it as it could get into the eye. It doesn't look deep, but if it does get yucky then get the vet to have a look.

It looks like a nice clean cut and washing with sterile saline is what I would have suggested. I wouldnt put anything on it, the folds of skin are acting like a dressing as you cant see it unless you hold it open, I would leave well alone and check in the morning. If it looks swollen or more sore, dont mess, get the vet.

Pony at my yard cut his actual eye ball in a seemingly empty school, turned out to have been the buckle on another horse's hood.

OMG just found this......poor Asti

How on earth could she manage that? I am sorry I have no advice really other than to keep it clean and dry. I personally wouldn't put anything on it in case it got into her eye if she rubbed etc.

As mentioned it would need to have been stitched by now if you thought it was possible but I have no idea if they would stitch there.

Poor Asti she is so in the wars lately. Please give her a huge hug from me and Ellie.

still no sign of damage at all to her eye. Lid still swollen but healing already so I'm just leaving it but will keep a close eye on it - no pun intended - and see how it goes.

Gave her a huge hug from Aunty 'Manda!

Anyway she is eating fine and galloping round her new field happily so I'm guessing she's fine...!

Should have her back in 4WD this week and as long as her eye sorts itself out we should be back out to play soon!

You'll have to warn Ellie that Asti is going on holiday soon though. Well, June hopefully!

The bliss of having no mucking out is fab, I mucked out on Saturday morning, her stable has the bed down, haynet in, fresh water, just in case they have to come in, but other than that - all sorted and ponies are OUT and staying out hopefully...

Hi poor lady

Tico had a cut very similar to that when he had his accident on the horse walker. He was checked over by the vet and was told just to keep it clean, it would heal ok without stitches.
Its all healed now and you can hardly see the scar.
Personaly i would get a vet to check it out anyway, you can never be too carefull, just to make sure that theres not other damage to the eye, that you cant see.
She may also need a corse of antibiotics, im asssuming shes up to date with her jabs.

Although Ticos eye healed really well we found out a year later that the trauma he suffered caused him to loose part of his sight in that eye.

Im not saying this will be the case with your mare, tico took quite a hammering, but its really not worth the risk

Good luck

is there any chance she couldve cut it on a flint whilst rolling in the field?

i think what you are doing is fine, keep it clean and id put aloe vera gel on it (i use that for all cuts on my two and it works brilliantly).

Didn't think of that! Possibly... OH thinks she might have had a clash of heads with Ivy as he pointed out the injuries footballers get when they do it... which is another possibility I guess, don't think we'll really find out.

I will get the vet to have a look as I'll be taking her over there fairly soon but it really does look like its just her eyelid and that has saved her eye. I noticed a tiny flash of red in her eye within a split second of looking at her, just where the blood from the cut had seeped in, but as soon as I washed her eye out, none more appeared.

I think she's had a lucky escape and avoided having her face stitched for the third time... I really don't think it could have been stitched that close to the eye, I would have been very uncomfortable with it. Too easy to slip and do worse damage...

I had a pony who cut its head leaving a flap of skin, vet said it would be ok but I insisted it was stitched so he stitched it but it split open again so it was left to heal naturelly, which it did of coarse and no scar..

horse at the stables i go to had a fight with a bush and her cut looks similar to your horses. owner had the vet out, and the vet sedated her and put some stitches in, you just have to keep it clean really and keep an eye on her. Hope it gets betetr soon
