Took G for an early morning hack round the village with a friend, got to a nice, big open field and were enjoying a calm relaxed trot up the hill when we saw a man and dog. Rather than calling his dog he threw his tennis ball towards us which dog ran for, just to make matters worse the dog startled a flock of pigeons which flew out of a bush.

G is normally an angel but he couldnt cope with the dog and the pigeons. He reared, spun and galloped off across the field bronking and twisting as he went. I sat it for absolutely ages but he eventually got me off.

I managed to land on my knees and my head, it was on grass but the ground is like concrete around here. The dog walker completely vanished, didn't come to see if I was unconscious or anything as I lay there.

Thankfully I haven't broken anything but my knees are the size of grapefruits and I have raging concussion. This is the second time in two years I've had a nasty fall after an incident with a dog. Last time I ended up in an ambulance so not as serious but it hurts like **** and it could have been worse.

I'm thinking of starting a new line in Hi Viz "Please keep your dog under close control".!
 
Oh blimey that sounds painful, lucky you didnt break anything, is there someone looking after you if you have concussion ? It can be really nasty.

What a spineless selfish thing to do walk off and not even check your ok.

I know exactly where you are coming from.
Smallest daughter fell off last summer after a rottie chased us down a bridleway.
"He's only playing" is what I got.
Playing with my schooling whip he comes near mine or childs pony again!
Glad you are ok, its bl**dy scarey when they bugger off like that!
 
Thanks MIL and OH are with me. Have had consussion plenty of times over the years so know what I need to be worried about.
 
It never ceases to amaze me, just how utterly clueless some people are:eek:

I hope you've got someone with you and that G is OK.

Probably should go to A&E you know.
 
Thanks ECID, G is fine as far as I can see but he has the vet coming out anyway on Wednesday so he will be checked very thoroughly. He isn't supposed to be cantering at the moment as he's recovering from injury but I'm really hoping a few seconds of madness hasn't undone months of box rest.
 
Poor you, sounds nasty. Stoooopid dog walker, those are the sort I wish I could tell them they are not needed on this planet!

Glad you are both ok but what a swine of a man to just clear off like that after causing your accident :mad:


Probably didn't want to face up to the consequences of his actions :(

I really don't understand why they think that its not their problem. I woud always walk past them, even if I thought it was a nice spot for a gallop. Why can't they just hang on to their dog for the minute it takes me to walk past? The dog walkers have been petitioning for us to be banned from the woods, apparently we spoil it for them!

Who's rattled you? I'm sorry that my horse isn't completely bombproof, clearly yours is. I'm not anti dog, I don't think the world should belong to me or anything like that. I just came on for a bit of a rant as I sit here black and blue because someone else was a bit thoughtless. I'm happy for dogs to be loose but encouraging your dog to run towards a horse is a bit off. Worse things happen, I do know that.

Unnecessary comment. If you read the post properly it appears that the dog walker deliberately threw the dog's ball towards the riders which in itself is selfish, stupid behaviour. As for not stopping to check the OP was ok, that is disgusting.

OP, I hope you feel better soon. It's frightening when something like this happens.

How horrible. Even if it was a complete mistake on the dog walkers behalf (maybe hes just a bit thick) how could he not have gone to check on you? You could have been dead! Bloody fool. Hope you are better soon.
 
There has been a lot of dog issues on here lately... makes me wonder if an official letter to the BHS is in order and probably one to local council & police.

We have every right to be protected as much as any other user of the highways and byways and it really makes me angry that riders get such appalling treatment by drivers, walkers, cyclists etc.

You could, if you were feeling generous (which I certainly wouldn't be in the circumstances!) give him the benefit of the doubt as if he was clueless about horses he wouldn't realise that his actions were likely to spook your horse. However, to walk off an leave you on the floor without bothering to see if you were ok or needed help is inexcusable.

Thats kind of my feeling. I'm a bit miffed that he encouraged his dog to shoot towards us but not everyone knows thats inconsiderate, fair enough. Rude, a bit daft but not a hanging offence.

To me though if you see a 17.2 horse fling somebody off while going at great speed and that person doesn't get up again instantly its polite to go and see if they are alright. Whether or not you were involved in the incident I couldn't walk on by if somebody might be seriously hurt. As it was I'm just bruised and it took me a few moments for the pain to subside before I moved but i might have been unconscious.
 
Nothing surprises me any more!
My friend's horse slipped and fell on him, breaking his leg. Horse went home on his own. Friend hobbled to road, dressed in riding gear, covered in mud, no horse and limping very badly. About half a dozen cars drove past him before someone from the yard got there to pick him up.
 
Hope you are ok hun, Some people are complete idiots. Someone once squirted a pony I was riding with a jet wash :/

I did allow myself a small chuckle when I saw your username :p Hope your knees and head gets better soon
