Myst is fantastic to tie up. Never gotten herself tangled or broken loose in the entire 8 years I've owned her. She's a sensible if a bit scatty mare.
I don't use equi Pings anymore as she uses the leadrope to scratch her neck which means they immediately come undone.
So she's just tied to the twine which countless other horses on this yard snap regularly but you don't think about the fact that your Welsh a isn't heavy enough to do the same until the bloody thing is hanging by a hind leg....
I was about 3m away mucking out. Not a peep out of her as always until i hear her her doing her little panicking noise and scrabbling about. Turned around and she's got the leadrope wrapped around her hind hoof and pulled over her neck but still standing. I'm not sure how it happened but the only thing I can think of is she's tried to scratch her ear with a back hoof while she had the leadrope already over her neck but this happened in a split second so no clue.
Flew over there trying to release the quick release knot... Pulled too tight so no chance. Shouted for a knife. She's gone down with hind hoof still attached and still tied up so landed on her shoulders and front legs and neck (that she fractured a vertebrae in last year) pulled round at an awful angle.
Managed to untangle her hoof finally before someone appeared with a knife and got her untied but she just laid there shaking and I was absolutely sure something was broken. Thankfully she was weight baring and took her for a graze inhand to calm her down but she was still shaking an hour later and incredibly stiff plus a nice deep cut on her hock.
Checked her late last night and she had calmed down but the leg that was tangled is hugely swollen around fetlock. She's walking OK, obviously very lame and sore but this morning will really tell what the problem is. She had so much adrenaline in her last night I don't think she was showing the full extent.
Just heading up there now to check and hose that leg.

Just a reminder to everyone, it doesn't matter how good your horse is to tie. Freak accidents still happen. I'm just hoping there's no serious problems after this because ironically she came sound and had her first free school session in a year yesterday...

Aww poor you and poor pony.....

Last year I had a small pony fling itself backwards out of the trailer before it was untied, before that I had never thought to use half width baker twine for littlies... I was well caught out 😣😣

Fingers all crossed your pony is fine in a day or so...

Fiona

Good vibes for you. How horrible.

Hopefully this will only be an object lesson to everyone. Always split bailer twine - its too strong now to break as it should. The fact you needed a knife to cut it means even a heavier horse would probably not have managed to break it without injury.

Poor poor mare. Hope everything is OK this morning.

I think you may need help from your vet. What you describe as 'needing to calm down' is a reaction to pain. Intravenous anti -inflamatories could help her a lot.

Do hope she is not too bad this morning.

Why do horses do these things? Because they can!

I hope pony recovers from both the scare and her injuries quickly, must have been such a shock for both of you.

Having seen this happen as a child at a riding school it has always stuck in my mind as a problem so if I'm using baler twine which isn't often I cut it so only a few threads are actually being used. More recently I have been converted to the Idolo system which I find much safer and for the trailer I use double ended quick release clips.

I hope she's ok, but I agree with Sport horse about getting a vet to her. What you saw last night may well have been stress, but with an accident like that I'd want her properly checked over, and even more so when there's an old injury like a neck fracture.

My daughters big old warmblood pulled backed while tied to twine. It didn’t break. The horse pulled the ring off the wall of the stable which was made of wood. The whole front came away, still attached to the lead rope. He then tore around the yard with huge planks of wood being dragged behind. The electric light switch was also included and the wiring! Never used twine again

She's been checked out by vet. Nothing obvious other than swollen leg which was a bit better this morning. Painkillers and cold hosing etc for a few days then see where we are. Neck surprisingly seems OK but don't want to count my chickens just yet with that one as it went undetected by vets for nearly 6months in the first place. She's a tricky one to treat as liver and various other problems make throwing a load of medication at her a risk. She's eating as normal, pulling me around the yard while I'm trying to check her out. That's the teller with her. She can be sound but not eating, then you know somethings up. Fingers crossed its nothing serious and she's feeling better in a few days because we do not need more xrays that's for sure!

My Welsh d did exactly the same... Couldn't tie her up again after that

Nasty accident. Healing vibes coming your way.

It's a sobering lesson to us all though. Tie short and split the twine.

I swear this pony has 9 lives.. Swelling almost gone. Cold hosed this morning, will do the same tonight. Just another few grey hairs to add to the collection for me..

I once had a (now ex!) livery whose horse would just pull away and snap twine, so in all her wisdom she decided to tie it straight to the metal bars of the stable :o Cue horse pulling back and managing to bend the metal bar and pull it out of the wood (breaking the wood in the process as well). She then hid the pole and denied all knowledge. It could have ended to much worse though. Muppet.

In case it helps anyone, twine will break twine. If you had no knife but had twine nearby then by ‘sawing’ with the other piece it will quickly cut in half even under tension.

Sorry to hear about your incident and I hope pony makes a full recovery.

That's very good news TwyfordM, though if you don't mind I'll send a few more vibes to be on the safe side.

Wouldn't hurt, had swollen again over DDFT last night, cue another 20 minutes cold hose and a in hand little plod around the yard and she's still not overly happy about that leg. Bute doing the trick with the rest of the aches and pains though as she's all good other than the leg that was actually stuck in the rope. Touch wood neck seems absolutely fine.
I just have a feeling box rest is on the cards again... Will wait to see where we are tomorrow when the bute runs out and check to see if this is the only leg still covered in insurance... This Welshie is going to end up costing me more than valegro by the time she's finished. Don't get attached to your companion ponies people!
