Moreso this year Johanna Vardon at the National Foaling Bank is experiencing problems with orphaned foal / foster mare pairings that have been conducted over chat forums and other social networking sites .......

The loss of a mare or foal at or soon after birth is devistating for the horse owner and the need to locate a potential foster mare or foster a foal can lead to a host of problems if their respective immediate care and management is not conducted properly from the outset. Johanna is keen to offer her advice to both the mare owner and foal owner to pre-prepare both equines for the adoption process - even before the mare and foal are at the same location. This ensures that the mare is wholly suitable and maximises the chances for a successful outcome.

Communication is wonderful...conversing is better! Please don't take this the wrong way...chat forums etc are fine IF one out of the two parties involved is experienced in conducting foal adoptions and can provide the appropriate advice.

Unfortunately, Johanna is being contacted for advice on the adoption process AFTER the foster mare / orpaned foal pairing has been conducted via such forums and both equines are often already at the same location. Whilst she has pursued with these cases, a host of problems have arisen that has resulted in the failure or even the non-start of the adoption process between the equines - problems that could have been avoided if she was contacted immediately! Such problems include overhandling the foals, foals incorrectly bottlefed and so prove unable to suckle from the mare; mares without their dead foal, mares without any / too little milk, mastitis, other infections, completely the wrong temprament, mare bereavement not correctly handled...the list goes on. Devistating for the equine owners and distressing for the equines!

If you are left in the unfortunate position with an orphaned foal or would like to volunteer your mare for foal adoption - please contact the National Foaling Bank straight away DAY OR NIGHT. Johanna has a lifetime's worth of experience to drawn upon (over 18,000 adoption cases to date: over 250 to date this year!) and as well as pairing and preparing suitable equines and guiding you through the foal adoption process Johanna can offer advice on associated birthing problems and aftercare, colostrum and powdered milk needs.

I do agree!

When we lost one of our foals Johanna was great in assisting with the adoption process which went amazingly well.

Important things for us (which I wouldn't have known) was to leave the dead foal with the mare until the foster foal arrived.

The look of joy on the mares face when 'her' foal got to her feet was awesome!

Yes any place that links possible foster mares with orphans is great but PLEASE join the National Foaling Bank and support the work Johanna has done over many many years.

Not forgetting her lovely partner (sorry I am no good with names!) who is also infinitely patient!!

I agree 100%.

We lost a mare this year about 12 hours after she foaled. Johanna was fantastic and I'm sure we wouldn't have coped without her. She even answered the phone at about 1am to help and answer questions. She was then back on the phone the next morning to check everything had gone ok in our first night of bottle feeding.

We were very lucky that Johanna found us a mare the day after we lost ours and talked us through the adoption process step by step several times.

We have had 100% success with our adoption and now have a very happy mare and foal.

A huge thank you to the foaling bank.

Agree totally, apart from the obvious it sounds quite risky to be letting your mare go off to someone youve just contacted on a forum, but Im not sure how it all works anyway.

I did try ringing Johanna Vardon to offer a mare if she could help anyone, but didnt have the good experience with the National Foaling Bank as mentioned above.
After literally several hours of trying to get through, ringing directory enquiries to check i had the right number, I found another phone number by googling and left my number with someone, I was later rang back by someone to take a couple more details and was told Johanna would contact me, but she never did and I gave up on it in the end.
Its a great resource though, a very worthwhile cause, it just didnt work for me :)
