My Haffies feet go 10 weeks no prob in winter, even then hes taking little off and they are even and strong....and shes in light work. depends on the horse I guess.
My welsh and cob are having a trim next week - it will have been 12 weeks!! couldnt fit them in yesterday and thats the soonest they can get done, to be fair though they arnt really long - the farrier said the natives can go 12 weeks barefoot. When i got them they had longish feet (nothing terrible) and think they must have been left for some time over winter.........
In the summer they went 8 weeks
The AANHCP recommend at least being looked at by a trimmer every four/five weeks but for horses in work on abrasive surfaces (tarmac, rocks, stones, hard tracks) may well be self trimming and just need a tidy up. It all depends on the horse's work, diet and environment - and actually very little to do with type or breed.
Mine winter out and tend not to grow quickly and wear themselves down ( still get farrier to look at them to make sure all is well, when he is out to shoe the indoor ones. ) When you notice that the outer hoof has grown longer than the sole is usually a good sign that they need trimmed. They will probably start to grow more quickly in the spring again.
Blimey I wish mine would go 10 weeks, I have to have mine trimmed every 5/6 weeks; my shetlands hooves grow at an alarming rate! ( about 1 cm in 6 weeks) the other two not as bad. (actually thats good
)
I have just gone barefoot with my riding pony so he's wearing hoof boots for now until the nail holes grow out.
They live out on a track system and are fed SS Lucie Stalks and Kwikbeet with Seaweed and Linseed
