Bit like natural horsemanship this was all brought to the fore by a main spokesperson, Australian vet Ian Billingshurst, who noted that in Australia where the widespread feeding of cooked commercial pet food was relatively new, there was a sudden correlating increase in the appearance of diseases such as cancer, skin disorders, allergies, diabetes and other serious conditions. He directly related this to the feed and began feeding his own dogs a natural diet based around bones. Almost immediately there was a marked improvement in the condition of his dogs and he wrote “Give Your Dog a Bone” as a result which was the wake up call to a growing number of us!

So his book would be a good place to start, the book is widely available and is a good read, I don’t follow all that he says personally and avoid all grains and dairy in my diet, which is “Species Appropriate”, a more Natural Version of raw feeding. My sis has written articles http://www.brushbow.co.uk/src/speciesmenu.htm As a purist I feed human grade food wherever possible and the greater part of the diet is bones and the raw meat on them I have been feeding this way for 11 years and would not contemplate going back!! I do not agree with a lot of the spin off diets that advocate little bone content or too high a veg content or any that suggest cooking! But I am a realist and I would rather see a dog on those home made diets than most commercial food.

SA or Bilingshurst’s BARF are easy to feed, if you feed a variety of meats and small amounts of blended raw veg it balances it’s nutrients over a week to two weeks and you don’t have to be a scientist to follow it easily, it does not require supplementation though some add kelp tablets and you can feed by eye. The dogs are satisfied by their meals, they have to expend energy eating the food they have variety and the simple rule is to gain weight muscle meat, to loose weight more bone and to maintain weight feed 80% bone to meat (like on chicken wings) .
