Natural Feeding (Raw Diet)

Dante i got my chicken wings from morrisons, they were in the chilled meat section. Think a packet had 8-10 in. I chucked them in the freezer then gave her one to chew on a couple of times a week. She wasn't really sure what to do with it when igave her the first one and just tried burying it!! I got told to defrost them by submerging them in hot water as that can help make them more appealing to the dogs and once i'd started to do this she ate them as soon as i gave them to her!
So are there any bones that can't be given to dogs? Or are all bones ok as long as they're raw?? I'm sure i've heard somewhere that lamb (or was it pig?!) bones shouldn't be fed??

Found some! Asda had them in today, tried them and neither of them knew what to do with them to start with, but they got there... it was so nice watching them actually enjoying their food :-) We then tried them on a sardine each, that went down brilliantly, they loved that, and for dinner they had half a lamb rib steak each, peas, sweetcorn and a whole egg. Loved it all! Cant see Amber ever going back to kibble now! LOL

Smokeybabes - depends what dogs you have - some breeds are sensitive to beef (eg. some spaniels) - so beef and beef bones are out. but mine is a lab and can eat any type of bones.

I have heard from one butcher that lamb is bad and from another that pork bone is bad. So I think these are common rumours! I have never had any trouble and they both form part of the orghinal diet i was given by the nutritionist - seeing as she has 5 dogs, 40 years of experience and is also a dog nutritionist - i am inclined to believe her rather than the butchers

There are some books you can read to get more information/ background on the dog digestive system and dog nutrition in general. There are the ian billinghurst BARF ones.. I also have Feeding your dog for life by diane morgan. But there are lots of places to get more information. And different breeds need different things - eg. labs originally bred to retrieve fish in canada in icy waters - so I give mine fish twice a week. Whereas cattle dogs would have had lots of cattle bones etc

as would have been what was easy to feed them...

Where can I learn more about feeding this diet? So many people seem to be having so much success with it I wonder if it owuld be suitable for my little one? Although, she does require a low protein diet.

You need to look for a rural type Butcher who bone out their own meat instead of bulk buying ready packed, but wings are a good start anyway.
Yes it's a bit sad isn't it when they dont know how to eat real food! But blanching is good to give them the idea, and if you have more than one dog its usually a doddle as they start to compete.

I've never had any probs with raw bones, but they get a bit flatulent on pork!

Gina B - here you go a starter for 10

Ian Billingshurst - Give your dog a bone (but for me he feeds too much dairy and rice/cereal)

The Ultimate Diet" by Kymythy Schultze this is a real meat and bones diet but can be a little technical

Try reduced counter at your supermarket, just purchased a load of chicken wings for £1.30 for a dozen and a load of cheap fish off the fresh counter, also buy their value mince beef so its a pretty good starter.

Good luck
