After starting one of my essay's for my Diploma, it got me thinking what people on here view's are about natural horsemanship methods and traditional methods for training your horses are?

What works best for you? & what you beleive in

It will also be helpful for my essay! :P

Well, quite often what is traditional is also natural and vice versa. I think there is quite a lot of overlap. I don't think I'm one or the other in particular, although the term 'natural', implying 'better' makes me shudder a bit

I think you may have to define what you mean by both terms - both are open to interpretation and tbh, some of the methods touted as 'natural' have been part of 'traditional' or common sense methods for years, they just weren't labelled!

Interesting question for an essay, though you're bound to open a can of worms with it on here

I am pretty much the same as PF, i think they often overlap, i don't think i am either specifically one or the other, sorry i do not suppose sitting on the fence helps your query much

I agree with muffinino and PF - I think it is more about the attitude of the person doing the training than the method used. I always try to make things easy for my horse, so that he can easily do what I ask, by making it clear what I want and what I dont want.

I think this can be applied to Traditional and NH methods. I think extremes at either end of the scale are both bad tbh - it doesn't get you anywhere being too forecful or violent, but then it doesn't get you anywhere being too soft either. Sometimes people confuse being kind with being walked all over

yes the question is
base a 5000 word essay on a comparison of traditional methods of training horses with natural horsemanship methods.

Its pretty vague so unsure where to start as i like most people have different opinions on what they mean

thanks for your replies!

My question is what is natural?
It is not natural for a horse to be ridden or driven.. full stop.. so basically is not a valid arguement..

But if we go off what is know as the 'natural' then I would say that a mixture of both methods is the way forwards, and that alot of time, the priciple of both methods are seen in the otehr oen.

As other people have said I think you will need to spend a fair part of the essay (if not all of it) defining what the two methods are supposed to be. It may then turn out that they have a lot in common.

I think a mixture of the two, but one persons tradition may differ to another.

He was broken in the traditional sense, but as for handling etc I like to employ a little empathy and understanding.

I actually read a very good article on 'Defining Natural Horsemanship', which basically concluded there was no such thing really (short of sticking them out on thousands of acres of grazing and never going near them). Having read it and thought it was very good, I checked the author and realised it was Monty Roberts. It didn't mention 'Join-Up' etc.

Unfortunately I don't seem to have kept it, you can probably find a copy online somewhere if you're interested though.
