Hi all,

I have had Bob for just over a month now, I treated him to some lovely Premier Equine rugs, a 100g, a 200g and a 100g liner. I arrived at the yard today to find he had done this to the 200g rug  :

I am not sure if it is repairable? The inner liner is shredded, but the padding seems mostly in tact. WWYD? Will it ever be the same again if it is repaired?

Can anyone recommend a good rug-repairer in the Worcestershire area?

Do I replace the rug with the same again (£103!!) and hope it was just a freak accident, or do I buy cheaper 200g and 300g rugs in case he is a rug-trasher??

I have no idea how he did it, they are pretty tough rugs! I think he must have got caught on something, but I can't see what?

I have put him out with the 100g rug and 100g liner on for now, so at least he has a rug!

WWYD???

Can a rip like that be repaired though? I am interested in finding out as I have one on a shoulder which if can be saved then yay! For the cost of the rug it's worth saving if you can.

Of course it can be repaired, painful on such an expensive rug but it can be mended or patched, short term repair would be to use duct tape, works a treat!

Had more than one rug wrecked in exactly the same way, eventually found out it was a gelding who was biting my mare on her hindquarters, getting hold of the rug and as my mare ran, ripping the rug in the process, in the same pattern as in the picture. As it was a wait to move fields i just used duct tape until i moved next door and then got them repaired. :)

You'll probably find like others have said - another horse ! My previous horse was forever coming in with shredded rug as he was in a herd of boisterous gelding who played hard. I got some naf spray stuff called no bite or something similar and it worked a treat as has a nasty taste.
The down side was that my horse got the blame for ripping all the other horses rugs as he came in without a rip on him :D

My last horse was a rug trasher & she never managed to wreck her PE rugs (all 1680). Her field mate only managed to chew the bottom of the rugs as could not reach any higher ;)

To me that looks like another horse has done that with either teeth or shoes.

Any good rug repair business will manage to mend that for you :)

Rip stop won't stop another horse pulling it. Have to say that the PE rugs in our yard are pretty tough and the horses do abuse them.

I too would cry! I did have a horse a while ago, who manages to rip IN HALF a brand new Taka Combo. I did get it repaired and the smeared it with washing up liquid ..on the basis that while something needed to be unpleasant to stop the rug ripping, it must not be so foul that anyone taking off the rug is going to have an equally unpleasant taste as well ! That did work btw..

I would think, unless it was stitching that had come undone, its not really the manufacturer's problem if another horse or a fence has done it.:( Find your nearest rug repair and get them to put a patch on it. Cribbox may help, smeared on the rug. We used to have a livery that did that, and the only thing that worked was when it left the yard. Sounds like you need to discover who did it. If its early days for the horse in the herd, hopefully things will settle down.

Ah my goodness that is definately a trashed rug!!! Ive just been reading a really interesting article on bitlessandbarefoot.com about how horses regulate their own body temp and ive just been considering going rug less with my arab. Shes been out in the driving rain in all the floodds and shes never been happier as she was stabled over night in the winter last year. She was toasty in a rain sheet and seem really just fine. I know id get some comments about being cruel but Im seriously considering it. Would you be cruel enough too lol?

I almost almost replaced my ripped rugs this year. Then I realised the hawthorn in the field hasn't been cut back yet so was fighting a losing battle and instead borrowed a sewing machine and bought a few metres of 1200d ripstop fabric.

Jet washed the rugs, let them dry then zig zag stitched a few times around the patches (inside and out) and so far so good. I also bought a bottle of rug re-proofer and painted that stuff on myself. Stunk the house out but worked a treat! They might look a little bit rag-dolly but my horses are all dry even in this vile weather!

Omg i would cry!!

I own a fellow rug destroyer and understand this feeling! My horse has PE 1650ballistic rug... so far this year he has ripped the detachable neck clean off the rug. He has also put a hole in the neck! I too was absolutly gutted.. lucky for me cost £2 to repair!

My boy had a 1200d amigo medium last year... it had 11 repairs in one winter!! Its now retired in the tack room!

I know PE have ace customer service i would ring/email them and try ur luck!

Just as an update, I emailed Premier Equine and said how disappointed I was that it had ripped so badly after so little use. They said I can send it back to their quality control dept, but if it's horse-damage it won't be covered. As I have no way of knowing how it was caused, they have offered me a half-price replacement and I can keep the damaged one! :D
I'm delighted, fantastic customer service from P.E.! It's not often you get service like that these days! :D
