So, my rising 4 warmblood gelding has been backed and worked lightly as he is not quite ready for full breaking but will be 4 in the middle of winter so wanted to get a bit done. From his field to the stable he walks up a grassy lane and I have been jumping up bareback with a headcollar (silly i know!!!) and walking up. Yesterday he decides that he doesnt want to come in but only really decided when we were three quarters of the way up the lane. He did a little rear followed by a little buck and spun 360 before turning and cantering back down the lane!!!! Now, I should have been angry with him that he did that but it was quite a nice slow canter and I knew he wouldnt attempt to jump the gate at the bottom so I didnt want to pull and fuss him, maybe putting him off balance and making things a whole lot worse!!!! I did look to see if i could safely half jump off but at that speed from a 16.1 youngster there was no way i was coming off!!! The boy stopped nicely with his head up over the gate at the end and i hopped off then. So, happy that he didnt properly uncontrollably bolt or throw in any bucks or try and get me off I led him back up. Cue more problems when he barged ahead, threw a kick and caught me a beauty on my hip :( nice as pie this morning he was though!

In a way you have set him up to fail. By riding such a youngster in a way you are not in control of him..but also now he had had a good lesson in bolting snd getting the better of you. i would stick to groundwork for a long while so he learns the right way again.

yes i know i did, not saying it wasnt my fault. precisely why im not blaming him and yes, we are doing groundwork and lots of it until hes broken

Makes no sense now the original post has fairly much been deleted..in a nutshell the op has a newly backed horse she has been riding to and from field in a headcollar and bareback..he bolted back to field with her

Ooo, I edited to say that someone was leading him at the time and then got alert to say post mostly deleted :( Yeah basically, probably stupidly i know, i have had someone leading me on him back from the field and he decided yesterday he did not want to come in and spun and pulled away and cantered back to the gate.....

Ah..well you did not mention being led in your original post..only that you had been jumping on him bareback when taking in and out. Nor did you mention him pulling away from someone leading him. clearly you can work on that though.

yeah thats why i went back to edit. Cos i realised I hadnt said led and it made it sound completely different! The lead pulled out of their hand as he spun :( musta hit a wrong button before saving and it got rid :( im not stupid enough to try it on my own yet :D Hes never pulled away on the floor before so some manners must have slipped his mind yesterday!!! back to his quiet normal self this morning.

Cantering away back to the gate is a world away from bolting.

Now this is getting confusing cos my original post got deleted and im too lazy to write it all again. lol. My post said that my rising 4 year old has been worked and lightly backed but not ready physically to do hard work so to keep him going i have been riding him up when he is calm (omitted to say on the lead) and yesterday he decided he wanted to go back and spun and cantered back. He didnt try and throw me or anything and I tried to sit quietly as opposed to try and pull him up or panic as I thought it may make things worse for him as he was actually doing quite a nice canter in the circumstances! He then got me though as when I got off and led him back up he tried it again and spun and kicked and got me right in the bum

Sorry I read HBM1's comment re bolting and assumed that was your terminology! Your horse is just trying it on.

HBM1 - cantering back to he gate is not bolting - which implies 'out of control' and blindly running away certainly to me.

thats exactly why i thought i should rewrite most of my post. lol. He didnt feel out of control by any means and the guy who had been leading him and was then stuck halfway up the lane watching me go off into the sunset said he seemed quite slow and steady, even though I was not applying much pressure on the "reins" (two leadropes coming off headcollar)! He got to the bottom of the lane and slowed to a trot and then a stop with his head over the gate. I know its still not good for him to do but I would not have described it as a bolt, as you say blindly running out of control. I'm sure I could have stopped him but, as i say, I didnt want to fuss him and take him off balance. And he didnt get away with it cos i stayed on and then we went back up and did lungeing instead of going straight in for tea!

sorry, but the word "bolted" was used in the original post so wasn't my connotation on the situation. This has got very confused though as the original post has gone.

Maybe its best to just not comment on this one anymore. I cannot remember all my original wording but I did not use the word "bolt" in my original post and i was very careful not to use it and specifically said that he turned and "cantered back to his gate"

well, it isn't our fault the original post vanished...you did say bolted, but you did also say you didn't pull on him as his canter was nicely balanced and you didn't want to interfere in that. Anyhoo, work beckons, would love to see a photo of him, what's his breeding?

I know it isnt your fault and if you say i wrote bolted then you must have seen it but I tried not to. lol. I dont know what happened to my post :( was trying to do it quickly as am at work so fat fingers must have done something :D I put a post in the breeding section Friday I think it was showing him from foaly up until now

Well, thankfully it wasn't real bolting - which might have indicated a more serious problem. So chalk it up to experience, and don't worry about it - he's just being a horse. :)

Riding to and from fields bareback with just a headcollar (or less) is asking for trouble, imo, but what's the worst that can happen? You fall off and fracture your spine? That can happen with full tack. The horse escapes and causes an accident? That shouldn't happen if the path is closed off from the outside world. Horse runs into a fence post, impaling himself? I've known this to happen, but the chances are pretty slim, especially if facilities are properly maintained.

Yeah to be honest it was just a story, which (I know I shouldnt) I actually enjoyed for the canter :) Seeing as though he always tells me he is tired after I have ridden him in the school for 30 seconds walking, and yet he quite happily cantered with me on, he has done it for himself now! :D He has this stubborn streak which occasionally comes out but normally hes an angel. Luckily where he is there is a gate at the bottom of the lane and the top before it goes into the yard so he can be contained in this grassy lane. Hes the sort of horse who doesnt like anything that prickles or hurts or hes unsure of and so would not go through a hedge or anything like that unless hes really terrified of something. Normally his reaction is just to stop and refuse to move so yes this did surprise me! He has to go up a small piece of road to his winter field so will be leading him them but on the grassy lane enclosed in he should be okay. The main thing is both me and him are fine and i havent been doing it every day and he gets led up and down like normal the rest of the time.

he looks really lovely, I love seeing foal to now photos - and thought he was a gorgeous hairy weanling. He still has that lovely baby look about him though, as per slow growing warmbloods :)

Aww thank you :) I fell in love with him at first sight and its amazing watching them grow up. But yes he does still look very babyish sometimes! The vet came out Wednesday and said if he grows into his legs he will easily make 17.2

He is on allbreed pedigree as Radical Prince for his pedigree. Not well known out of cornwall i guess but the parents have fantastic temperaments and i was happy with them.
