Wondering if anyone can give me some advice, my cob has just recently started unexpectedly stopping dead whenever we do a fast canter/gallop, he has no back problems or any health issues, I think he's just learned this way he can get me off and I have no idea how to stop him doing it. He does it everywhere we go wether it's in my field where we ride regularly, on the beach or any other different place we go so isn't down to boredom and there's never anything there that will of spooked him. Thankfully he never runs off after I fall but it is obviously getting very annoying! Thanks in advance:)

Obvious I know, but please rule out any pain issues first :)

I would not fully release him, keep a controlled canter and then once both your confidence is better, then progress to letting the canter get a bit bigger.

I presume he is stopping when he sees something ahead that spooks him? It sounds more like a training issue tbh, when you school him really be clear that legs mean go and reins mean slow down - along with teaching him that when you bring your shoulders back and put more weight in your heels that you want him to come back to you :)

thanks for your advice, he definitely has no pain as he has no problems with anything else including jumping and he gets regular vet checks, I've had him nearly 2 years now and we've done lots together including tons of galloping in open spaces in the past and he's very well schooled he's just started doing it very recently with no reason as he's not even a spooky horse

When you say release him, do you still have a contact? We had one that would stop if you dropped the contact, because he thought that was what you wanted!

I do still have slight contact but I never have that much anyway unless he's being really naughty as he gets very agitated if I hold him back too much
