Henry was an absolute disgrace yesterday!

We went on a walk with a group that I join sometimes. It was only the second time we have been so I was really hoping Henry would behave (as I know he can).

When on the lead, he pulled so hard that my hands are raw.

He is not the best lead walker but generally we have a short battle of wills after which he gives up and gets lots of praise in return - not yesterday though

When off the lead his recall was appalling

Several times I called him back, he turned and looked then headed off in the opposite direction! At the end of the walk I had to tackle him to get him back

I know he was picking up on the fact that I wanted him to behave and that I was getting mad by the end of the walk... but I can't help being annoyed.

Back to the drawing board I think. He just goes deaf on the lead, which is made even more frustrating by the fact that he can heel off the lead very well! I may have to reinstate the Halti

Recall is not such an issue, I know he can do it, he was just being a git yesterday. We will work on this today and I'll decide whether we need another long line phase - but I think it was just over-excitement and the fact that I was getting cross with him

. Will see how things go when it's just me and him later today.

I hope things improve soon because I am not looking forward to taking him on holiday if not. Particularly since my grandma is going, and insists that all my problems would be solved if I would only get a 'little stick' to the dog

Not sure I can handle a whole week of this (well meaning) 'helpful' advice if he's going to behave like this!

Anyway I was thinking of a BIG stick. Possibly with a nail in the end

On the upside, the nice, well meaning lady who kept offering advice (which was well meaning but is a little wearing when your dog is being a sod and YOU know this isn't normal but the person has only ever seen them being a git!) offered to hold Henry for a moment, said 'heel' in the recognised firm and assertive manner and promptly vanished over the horizon in the wake of Henry who had decided to catch up with the guys at the front

Much respect for my bicep strength and no further advice

Dog biscuits if you got this far... sorry for the rant...
