9 month old norfolk cross jack russell. He is ultimately my parents dog in a family home. No effort has been made to train him, he is randy and humping everything and on friday when we had a bit of a gathering on friday night and when i tried to keep him away from the food on the coffee table and he snapped at me so i told him no and he then growled and really went for me. About ten minutes later he did the same to my sister and snapped her bracelet. My mum has told me it was mine and my sisters fault!!

It's not your fault! The dog thinks he's the boss because he's had no training. I'd get him to some classes and ask for proper advice from a behaviourist before he really hurts someone.

it isnt your fault at all! my old dog used to be like that! we never trained her at all! and to be honest i think thats why! try little dominance activities so he realises that you are boss! a good one is grooming them and making them stand up and make them do what you decide! good luck!! x

I know he's only young but my mum is just being unreasonable. He really annoys our other dog who is 14, so much so that he has gone for him and it is just not like him to do that.
We have owned the terrier since just before christmas.
Sometimes he is angelic and lovely and the perfect pet, but when he does this its horrible and my mum just says 'oh dear...its just because he's young.' I think its totally unacceptable and he needs training and castrating.

Happy Hack... I have nearly 8 month old JRT as they both are terriers, i am quite strict with his training from day one. And as he's still Dog he stopped humping (cos i wouldn't let him! as i distract him from doing it) never steals food (maybe once or twice with cat food in the past), never been destructive. He can turn deaf ears sometimes but with firm growling he comes back... but that's terriers for you!

U have the answers there... Castration.... and doggy classes would help too.

The younger they are the easier to train! so do it ASAP...

Didn't read or see how old you are? If you have spare time why not ask your mum for you to take small responsiblty by taking him to classes or do some of training yourself?

I'm 22 and my sister is 17.

Er, no it isn't! What will she say when he's 5, still behaving the same (which he will be, why would he suddenly stop?) and sinks his teeth into a child that moves in on something he considers his? She owes it everyone, including the dog himself, to get this sorted.

I always think terrier types need firm handling from the very beginning. Not that I'm saying all puppies don't, just terriers can have very stubborn streaks. He needs to be taken right back to the very basics and taught that you and the rest of your family are dominant and he isn't. If fully matured I would also get him castrated. I hate people who allow their dogs to 'hump' things. I think it's just rude!

I would 2nd the obidience classes too. Great way to get them socialised, and training to boot as well!

hi there i have two terriers. They can both try it on at times, i find a squirt with a water bottle is a short sharp shock treatment, I use it only when my bitch in particular tends to snap at the kids, works a treat. but overall discipline is required for the dog to understand what is and isnt acceptable behavour.
