Took her ladyship to the vets today, She refused to get out of the Landy!

There was no way she was going down the ramp. Madam!

There was nothing I could do so the vet had to climb into the Landy to examine her! Twas a tad embarassing but if you understand Mastiffs you will know this is what happens!

He has diagnosed arthritis.( Plus she has an ear prob and the cyst flared up again-hence the visit to the vets. We dont do vet visits unless we have to!)

The trouble was I wasnt sure whether she wouldnt come down the ramp due to the arthritis or due to mastiff stubborness. When I got home she came straight down the ramp!

Any tips on arthritis appreciated! She is 10 so elderly for a Mastiff.
 
I've always thought that what works to help HD-problems, works on arthritis? Both is about joints, stiffness, mobility and so on.

I think they know they have some weight that helps them to get things their way. I'm sorry but I wish I had been a fly on the wall when you explained to/told the vet you couldn't get her out of the car.

Well Glucosamine & Chrondroitin tablets certainly would help.

Ditto my GSC was stiff as a board until we put him on cortaflex and he started bounding around like a puppy, completely gave him a new lease of life. Definitely recommend.
 
My friend put her elderly collie on a dog supplement from Global Herbs - sorry can't remember what they were called but started working in 24 hours and he went from being a stiff, creaking ol mutt to bouncying around like a puppy - so much so she threatened to take him off!! Has been on them for 5 yrs (only every other day) and is still going strong at nearly 17. Have a look on their website.
 
It was quite funny! She just dug her heels in big time! She does make me laugh! She is ALL Mastiff! She has all the traits and is sooooo true to type! She weighs about 11 stone so when she digs her heels in there isnt much I can do about it. Obviously had there been anything majorly wrong with her we would have fought the issue between myself and the vet.

I have got her on cider vinegar and ester c at the moment although the vet has given me some metacam to try. I dont like metacam very much as it can upset their stomachs but I thought I would see if it made a big difference. Not sure how it will compare price wise to other things either. I would think it would be quite expensive.

I am not going to start the metacam until after the antibiotics have finished for her cyst. So we will see.

Then I could try the cortaflex and glucosamine just really to see which has the best effect.

I was wondering about her management really. When I asked before i wasnt sure if it was arthritis or rheumatism.

Just wondered whether there is anything I can do at home to make life more comfortable for her. I have heard about magnetic beds and heated pads etc and just wondered whether they would help. And if they would, where to get them from.

Probably best to do a specific post really!
 
How would I go about getting Meloxydil? Is Rimadyl and alternative to metacam? It rings a bell. I have a feeling my boy was put on it after he reacted badly to Metacam. Would that make sense?
 
They are all NSAID like bute.

Ask the vet which is cheapest.

I use a small old fashioned independent vet who is great at keeping prices down by using generic alternatives.

Boxer ended up on Rimadyl/Norocarp when I borrowed some off another dog one weekend when he was bad and found it to be more effective than the Meloxydil.

I really rate mag collars though, I find they can make a huge difference and can't do ny harm
