Took the horse I share (16.3hh shire x cob) into field this afternoon to school him, all well as normal so decided to take him into top bit of field to school him on a slope so could help his muscles going up and down hill.

He was a bit backward thinking but ok, did walk/halt transitions, turns on forehand going up the hill, and went up and down like this a few times with no problems. It was very very windy and alot of rustly trees near top, anyway was up near the top of field and he whipped round and took off with me, little love stuck his head down by his feet so how I didn't fall off I don't know but I didn't! I managed to pull him up fairly quick, turned him round and he wasn't going (his favourite trick is to plant) so I have to admit i verbally told him off and gave him a smack on the bum with the whip, he bucked but then moved forwards! Got him up near the top again and he whipped round/bolted again! So I turned him round again, went back up hill but zig zag line and got him to stand still and then turn when I said and walk back down doing walk/halt transitions, did this a couple of times so he doesn't think he's got away with it.

Do you think i did the right thing? He's too big to mess with so I want him to know I'm the one in charge of what his feet do, not him! I'm 99% sure that the bolting was because a) it was spooky up there and b) he didn't want to go up.

I'm pretty god dam impressed I didn't fall off TBH, and he doesn't scare me at all so not worried on that score!!

Sounds to me like you did a good job, and the end of the day, your session didn't end on a bad note, you were able to make him do what you wanted to do, yes you had to tell him off, but looks like it worked!! :)

Sleepykitten - think I've got my hands full with this one! It's not easy when they're big is it! He is sensitive but he also can take the 'P' and as someone said to me if he thinks he's in charge he'll be impossible so you've got to be in control! Xxx

You are dead right, unfortunately, mine is taking the p at the moment big style!

It's that time of year!:(

You've certainly got some b**ls, taking him back up there the 3rd time after such a scary trip downhill!

Well done, I doubt he'll try that again, but you'll be ready for him if he does!

If someone had told me he'd do that before I got on I wouldn't of had the guts but once I'm on i become alot more confident! It was 'interesting' having no neck in front of me!!

He has been threatened with the prittstick factory if he doesn't pull his socks up! He'll be going back up there tomorrow and the day after too!!!

My lazy slow cob bolted with me out of the blue(he did it only ever a couple of times) and I tell you its horrid when suddenly all you see is shoulders and the ground in front of you. Head between legs (not mine his) and gallops off! What was a shame my son was with me and I had been trying to get him to ride my old ploddy but after witnessing that incident he was No Way!

It seemed like I was lifted 10 foot out of the saddle too. I was amazed I was still on! Scary stuff lost a stirup and pulled like mad on one rein. I did learn if I kicked him on (as if I had been asking him to do this it jolted him and he would slow down after an initial burst) I think he was more indignant that I had dared even asked him to go faster!

Easier sad than done though if they have unseated you. I think you did well on your terms too.

Cheeky monkeys at times.
