I was hoping to break my little pony to drive but sadly now i dont think its gonna happen

Ive longreined her loads and loads tried every technique in the book to stop her naughtyness but nothing works!

So today i thought ahh ill see if i can do anything with her today as shes had a break for the last few weeks!
Lunged her for 20 mins, then attempted the longreining ...

She started to nap so i made sure i had no contact and pushed her forward but nooo she decided to run backwards into me (first time
smirk.gif
) she kept doing it with me getting out of the way each time then i thought if i stand my ground and urge her forward at the right time ... Nope!! She ran backwards and bucked narrowly missing my head

So i managed to get her forward but she then started spinning but i was one step ahead of her so she wasnt happy!

I just wanted to end on a good note by this time but she wouldnt let me ofc

She then tried the 'bucking bronco' technique

Then reared up and nearly went over backwards.

She then took me by suprise and galloped off so i had to let go, so she galloped off got the lines all caught up and i managed to catch her and untangle her

Friend came down to lend a hand and i was mad and ready to give up but she reminded me to end on a good note, so we set off again and she reared up lost her balance and somehow managed to not fall over and ..

I gave up

Naughty me!

I dont think its worth risking me and her just to longrein her so gonna have to put the driving ambitions away for a while!

Just to say - Shes had her teeth checked, is in a normal snaffle, but she does exactly the same in a bitless bridle, shes had a vet check ect so no underlying probs shes just a stubborn moo!!

Sorry had to vent

Have you tried getting someone to walk at her head and lead her from there? You probably have but it may be a confidence thing?
Also, is she better in a school /small bit of field, she may well be overwhelmed.
Good luck!

Sounds to me like she needs to go back to square one.
What is she like to lunge?
Will she walk, trot and canter and halt on voice command?
Will she lunge with 2 lines? The outside line sitting on her hocks?
If the answer is no to any, then you need to get these things established before starting the long reining.
If she is a tricky one, then you need to keep her in a lunging circle until you can change the rein in both directions on long lines before you move into larger spaces. And the first few times have someone walking near her head to give her confidence.
Good luck!

I agree. Think a school is the safest option. If she lunges with the 2 lines and responds well to voice commands then there should be no reason she shouldn't long rein. If she goes well in the school then definately take somone with you to walk by her head.

Try to keep patient and as soon as she has done something good stop and then go a bit further the next day.

Shes brilliant to lunge, with side reins ect. Walk trot and halt on command (No canter yet, has been to slippery).

Yup lunges with 2 lines nicely

Dont have acess to a school or a smaller field

And shes had someone at her head for the first few weeks, then she had about a week of behaving then started to be a nightmare!

OK, any chance of sectioning of a small part of the field as a temp 'lunge area'?? You will find things MUCH easier in a confined space.
Is there a common point at which she starts to play up? Certain part of the field, or after so many minutes?
Any way of getting someone to use a lead horse in front of her to let her follow?
