I think there is a cheap (about £30) hair test you can get done to see if your horse has the genetic make up for espm ( if that's the right acronym!)

My kissing spines horse was unrideable last winter as soon as it went cold. I bought two 20 quid poultry lights from eBay and warmed him up for 20 minutes before riding and he was happy as Larry all winter with that and a thermotex exercise blanket. A physio missed his kissing spines, by the way.

He won't be clipped again, as we only had him since last yr this is the first time we have noticed the pattern.

Instead of not clipping how about a high blanket clip? I'd also be looking at ESPM (? I think), didn't PS have a similar issue with CS?
