Hi all,

Sorry if this ends up a bit long!!!

Im having some issues with 1 of my ponys and not sure the best way to deal with him. He is a 10yr haflinger who I have owned for 5yrs and he has a very BIG personailty.
He is a gooder and doesnt need much grass but my other pony does. So during the day my other boy goes out on the grassy field and then comes back into the the bare field of a night. Now my haffy is having major tantrams about this even though he has another pony for company. just a few of the things he has done over the last few weeks is throwing himself at the gate and just being extremly bargy and bad mannered.
Yesterday I put my other pony out on the grass and bought him in to ride, he was fine until we was going out and he refused to close the gate (which he has always done without a problem for the last 5 yrs) I got cross with him becuase I know he normally does this without a problem so he reared up with me which he has never ever done before, sorry but yes he did get a wallop for it! now im not prepared to put up with this kind of behaviour or the tantrums but what the best way to deal with him, I tell him off but to be honest hes the type of pony that doesn not give a ****

Does anyone have any adivce on how to deal with this little horror??

If I owned a horse for 5 years and it suddenly reared up I would be having its back and teeth checked asap and no I wouldnt have given it a "wallop" if a rear was completly out of charcter. I dont suggest you ride him again until you get his back, saddle and teeth checked.

His teeth have only just been done and his saddle so I know its none of that. He done it because he couldnt get his own way, he does throw tantraums but doesnt normally rear

he sounds just like my haffi! hes out on starvation paddock in the day and in a stable at night and when i bring him out of his field he tries to drag me to any grass or anything he feels like eating, hes a little monster and when i was opening his stable the other day i was asking him to stand still and he just head butts me and tries to shove me, you tell him off and i dont think he even knows what's going on half the time! when i bring him out of his paddock i now do a few little exercise type things e.g. bring him out and stand still if he stops with me give him a pat, if not sharpy make him stop and back him up 2 steps and then give him a pat, it takes him ages to catch on where as my mare learnt it in about 5 mins and hasn't forgotten! I also try to walk him in and out of the field 2 or 3 times before i actually close the gate and take him in. Hes way off perfect but i have seen some improvement but we give him a lot of leeway as hes always lame with arthritis and is just a little pet now lol, a very mischievous one at that :D

I think ground work will go a long way to helping.

There such strong mishievous characters arnt they, but he has got worse since my other boy goes on the grass he knows exactly where hes going and hes certainly expressing hes not happy about it at all.
Yep I think back to basic with the ground work and hopefully he will get over it

My Haffi soounds exactly the same! he's in of a day and out with a muzzle on at night. As soon as he comes out of the stable he drags me to the nearest thing to eat and im shoved out of the way quite alot! I try to do the same and make him wait, back him up if he doesn't etc but i think my one is just abit too dim to learn LOL.

As for your problem have you maybe tried putting both ponies out together but put a muzzle on your haffi? mine has that and it does seem to work. It may help put and end to the seperation tantrums?
And when he gets bargy, maybe not wallop but raise your voice and be stern with him.
However i do know what you mean about them being the type of horses that dont give a **** lol

Just reading these posts and im so glad its not just me who has a food OBSESSED horse!!(hes not mine but look after him quite alot) hes the same taking him out of the field he will dive for the grass and hes so strong even in a bridle, he occasionally listens when I shout very sternly but he does make you look a bit of a fool dragging you round  its so strange he'll come out of the field so nicely and just follow me with a rope round his neck and dosent try to turn back its just once hes out he wants any grass he can get his hooves on! I thought he might just be taking advantage of me but apparently he's the same with everyone cheeky horse :o x
