Naughty pony

I have only fallen off my boy once in 9 yrs, absolutely my fault. Yesterday nearly made it twice.

I haven't ridden him much lately so took him in the arena for a toddle. Had done lots of walk and a little trot and back to walk. I leant forward, scratched his neck to tell him what a good boy he was being when he did a huge buck, for no reason I was aware of. I ended up with my face on his neck and I was hanging over the front end. I thought that's it, I'm off. He obviously felt guilty as he did a little rear and put me back in the saddle!!! Bless him!

Another one that would get the saddle checked. I am a stickler for getting them regularly checked, especially as weight gain/loss or muscle gain/loss can have such a huge impact on a saddles fit. What may have been a perfect fit 6 months ago, may not be such a good fit now.
 
OK, I don't post on here much but I have to say, whenever I see a post by nativeponies, you always seem to be trying to start an argument!! Why can't this just be a cheeky pony having an "off" day? Mine have been messing about in the field recently with the cold weather...maybe he just has a spring in his step right now? Just because the OP has not fallen off, does not mean the pony is not occasionally naughty! I've only fallen of mine a couple of times after 6 yrs of ownership - she can still be a cow sometimes!

My mum used to say to me "If you haven't got anything nice to say, don't say anything at all"!!!!

Sorry? whats the argument in saying the saddle ought to be checked. OP leant forwards, the pony then bucked. LOGICAL thinking is the weight of the rider tipping forward "may" have caused the pony to buck.....therefore the saddle "could" be to blame...no argument to be had, just a bit of good old fashioned common sense.

beacause..and i say it V E R Y slowly so you can understand..

1. read what the OP has said
2. Pony bucked when it was walking AFTER OP shifted her weight onto wither area to scratch his neck
3. this leads me to think..saddle pressure.
4.so no, not causing an arguement, just an experienced observation
5.as for that tripe..cant say something nice..where have i said something unpleasant?..since when has asking about a saddle check causing an arguement..i think you need to get a grip.
and as far as having an off day..an awful lot of ponies on here seem to have one..or is it just ignorant owners ;)

Its not nessissarily what you say, but how you say it, like an attitude, or am i the only one that notices it? :confused:

And as for off days, just because someones pony has an off day doesnt mean another one cant.everyone and everything is entitled to an off day.

Completely agree with nativeponies, I would rather someone took the huff at the suggestion that they get their saddle checked than I read next week, 'my pony bucked last week, I did nothing about it as I thought it was just being silly, and this week I am sitting with a cast on my letg as he did it again and I got hurt, because my saddle slipped/pinched etc'

The question being 'how long since the saddle was checked'?

A puzzled child knocked on my door one day saying her normally steady pony had suddenly become difficult to mount and would i watch.

When I put my hand inside the saddle I found the front point of the tree had broken and was pressing into pony but only when she was mounting

Cue replacement saddle, happy pony happy rider
 
Oh, dare I say this, you should be able to stroke the pony without tipping forward in the saddle! (If you were doing it whilst moving you will push him onto his forehand, maybe he tripped and bucked to right himself with a bit of cheeky thrown in?)
 
Well there's three things you can do

1) Ignore and assume he's just having a naughty day.
2) Get the saddle checked.
3) Try it again to find out which of the above is appropriate.

Personally when I was younger I'd have tried 3) first. As I am now older I'd be giving that saddle a damned good check over for firstly for damage, specifically tree at the front and if none found I'd put it back on the pony and check it's fit.

However as the OP seems to want to hear it: Oooh what a naughty little pony, isn't it cute when they do things like that.
