Naughty pony

Ok, i must be a very ignorant owner. I have 2 ponies, both over 30, a youngster and competition horses, but because mine has a day off, im obviously an ignorant owner! I would call working fine one day, then having a buck the next, then fine again a 'day off', but maybe im surrounded by ignorance!!

Do you mean day off as in giving them a day to rest?
We mean 'off day' as in not having a very good day :)

Sorry? whats the argument in saying the saddle ought to be checked. OP leant forwards, the pony then bucked. LOGICAL thinking is the weight of the rider tipping forward "may" have caused the pony to buck.....therefore the saddle "could" be to blame...no argument to be had, just a bit of good old fashioned common sense.

whilst I agree with the sentiment here, I also know that 'one swallow does not a summer make' basically yes OP has shifted her weight forward and pony did a backwards handstand, but it could just be hi-jinks, we all have encountered horses that behave like this when they have not been ridden for a while. I would not be inclined to go running around ringing a saddle fitter/ back person just yet! Whilst it is good practice to have a horse regularly checked. OP should look at other factors such as feed (has it changed) clip (has he been clipped recently, this has certainly made mine a bit more frisky) and perhaps, sust perhaps since OP has known the pony for so long we could give her the benefit of the doubt and say if she thinks it was a 'cheeky' moment It probably was. I would suggest that perhaps a more educated and strategic approach as opposed to a blind assumption would be in order. If I were OP, I would ride the little Bu**er/Pony with ill fitting saddle at least once more in school and see if he reacts the same way, if yes, then proceed down the route of checking back and saddle. If not she can put it down to thelwell syndrome and save herself some money by not calling out saddle fitter before she is due to :D

I really wish I hadn't posted now. I thought it was amusing, obviously I was wrong. Saddle checked only a few weeks ago. I also do a quick check of his saddle myself everytime I put it on as it has a tendancy to 'bridge'. I' m sorry nativeponies thinks I am an ignorant owner. I think the behaviour is because it is colder, he is a real stodge in hot weather, always keener in winter.

In future I think I shall just read and not post.

OK saddle "has a tendency to 'bridge'" meaning that weight is taken on the back and front of the saddle only. You lean forward and pony shows his disapproval by bucking as all the weight is transferred to the front.

I don't think I'd be saying the pony was naughty, I'd be saying that poor animal was sufficiently uncomfortable to show it by bucking.:(

Janah - I thought it was amusing.
It's ridiculous that this thread has got so out of control. It was meant to be lighthearted and a bit of fun IMO.
You weren't even asking for advice!
Chill out everyone!

And, to those who think i'm rude etc, HERE is your answer.

i will now rest my case.
:p :p

I don't see anything there that rests your case in terms of being rude its often not what you say but the way you say it, in this case type it, which has been noticed by many others and the above does nothing to help your case that people have thought you rude.

:D ;)

As i, and others have said, no i wasn't rude to the OP, so yes, my advice to get her saddle checked, because it "Bridges"..OP's words not mine, enables me to rest my case.

right, off to fight the good fight..you have as good a weekend as TBS
:)

If he hadnt been ridden in a while then probably just excited, we all know how excited ponys can get!

I would only get saddle checked if the bucking started to get frequent, and by the sounds of things it is not. Ladiesssss, isnt this getting a little out of control?

Typical pony :D

I would not ride my pony if his saddle was bridging which is why I keep a very close eye on it and even get someone else to sit on him occasionally so I can check fit with weight on. It took me ages to find a saddle fitter who could correct the fit.

Just because I nearly fell off yesterday doesn't mean pony is a slug. He is quite capable of being naughty/excited/high jinks, it was unusual in that I nearly fell off, inattention by me. My seat was firmly in the saddle and I had leaned forward from the waist.

As someone else pointed out, after 9yrs, I know my boy!!!

If anyone is local to me they are welcome to come and look at him anytime, he is properly looked after.

Just to add, he is on starvation patch with soaked hay am & pm and fed 3/4 kg of fast fibre over two meals.

I didn't ask for advice, just a lighthearted post!!!!!
