Last night my 8 year old daughter had a lesson on her pony, what a little sod!! I clipped him out last weekend following his neck and belly being done in October which you couldnt see anymore!! Due to the weather up here in the North, she didnt get to ride him until Saturday when it was pouring down so he had a waterproof excercise sheet on, in which he was fine he worked really well. Well last night out we brought him out from his stable, he started to spin. I thought 'hello' someone feeling fresh! Said daughter got on him from mounting block and off we went ... two steps foreward then a rear. We have had him a year now, he was naughty for the first couple of weeks then been good as gold since although he is quite a character and a handful from the ground he has never reared! Got him in arena then he decided he was practising for the Spanish Riding School, what a little sod. Poor daughter was scared and started to cry but her instructor was so calm and talked her through her fears and she rode him through it, after 5 mins it was like a switch had been flicked back to normal and finished lesson well. There is nothing physically wrong with him as he has recently had an MOT! I just think the crisp fresh air on his newly exposed skin and he has only just turned 6 so is still a 'baby' really , he thought wayhey, little bugger. But like I said its all experience and she is a good little rider and it only makes her a better rider, only problem is the pony now has a new 'party trick'!!!

Well done to your daughter! And sounds like her instructor is a real pro too!

A friend of mine's daughters pony was clipped freshly to go to a XC that he's been to many times and and normally is an angel, but with his new 'go faster' cut he carted the daughter- both we fine when they got back to lorry but daughter was so upset she wanted her mum to get in the muck heap and pick out the hair and put it back on!

Well done your daughter!

If pony is really Ok physically and wasn't scared then maybe consider if (full) clipping is necessary next year. Obviously pony should behave but pony is a pony, and won't be used to all the drafts... I prefer to ride things as furry as practical as nothing ever got calmer with more clipping.

I know he was fine when he was hairy!!! They are starting with the shows in a few weeks and they do a lot of tack and turnout and first ridden, so he obviously needs to be smart and not hairy, that is the reason i have fully clipped him.

What a shame you clipped him just for a show! Surely a calm daughter and a trusted steed would be better for the showing? Well done to your daughter for perserving and well done to your instructor for turning what could have been a catastrophe into a good lesson. You can't stick the hair back on, but perhaps try him with an exercise sheet next time...it might work.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt!! Our naughty pony is staying fuzzy next year as she really does take go faster stripes literally! :D

to be fair he has always been good, but we bought him already clipped so we were not to know he would react like that, he is normally very good. I certainly would not put my daughter at risk, he just took leave of his senses for 5 mins of his life

Well done your daughter for riding through it! My mare is like this after being clipped, just a rather hyped up version of herself! An exercise sheet helps, and she settles after a week or so when she is used to it. A breezy freshness does work them up though! Might be a stupid question, but can you not do t&t with (eg) a blanket clip? As long as the clip is recent and neat then surely it can't go against you? Might be a better idea next time if poss, it's no fun being scared to tears when riding (I'm 30 and still do it sometimes if mare is being a t*t and I'm tired out!!).
