Can anyone help??

My BWP is kept with a part-retired Irish Cob that the YO owns and I look after.

The two of them are in the same field together in winter, but now our grass is starting to grow so the electric fencing has to come back out of storage.

My WB is allowed whole field to himself as he doesn't stuff himself silly like Paddy the IC does - So Paddy has to be sectioned to prevent him getting lami.

Now is where the problem starts; Paddy knows he can't jump, run through, roll under the electric fencing, so he cunningly picks the posts out of the ground with his teeth. He'll do this with about 3 posts until the electric tape has nearly fallen to the ground so he can step over it.

Is there anything I can do to stop him doing this?? I've tried crib-off on the posts to deter him, but it doesn't seem to bother him!

HELP!

Yes, should of said it is electrified. I should of also said that he'll pick the posts out at any point it isn't taped off (even the foot-peg!)

you could (although it will be much more expensive) put up wooden posts in a corner of the field and fence off using removable equitape. this is electrifiable so could be useful as you can remove the tape when the good grass goes.

Too cheeky for his own good!

I've tried him with a grazing muzzle last summer, but he spent about 2 hours rubbing it on a fence post before standing for another 2 hours sulking about it.

He will get used to it. Mine likes to make me feel guilty.

She will have her head down eating and then as soon as she spots me, waits by the gate  when I walk off she goes back to grazing.

I know a horse that does this - thinks it a great game

I second the grazing muzzle idea - i used to have to attach Shys with string onto a headcollar, to get him to give up getting it off - now he doesn't bat an eyelid having the muzzle on.

I think I'll just muzzle him this summer. Any tips on keeping it on? He always seems to get it off the second I'm not there!

I swear this pony will be the death of me!

You could buy some of those pig-tail loop things which people staple onto fence posts and run tape through (these things: http://www.ukcountrystore.co.uk/acatalog/ins_pigtails60b.jpg)

I used these to make my electric posts higher (to stop a jumper!), so I just duct-taped this upright onto the top of the posts and ran the electric wire through them. Be difficult for pony to grab hold of them.

Clever pony!

Mine too is an exert escape artist! Tried everything but he gets out. One day he got out into the fatty paddock so YO left him there as she was too busy to fix the fence. He's been in there for almost 3 months now and not escaped once! He seems to prefer to be on his own as he's only escaped when in company even when he had hay/grass/feed. He has horses all around him but he seems happy and he hasnt got out yet so he can stay put for now :D
