Hi my New Forest gelding has managed to chuck me off a few times now either through bucks, bolting or spinning. Last year I ended up with broken ribs. All tests have been done on him and he's fine and quite honestly the majority of the time he is fine, its just when he's either with a few other horses and gets silly or he just decides to be naughty. I've lost quite a lot of confidence on him so am thinking about getting either an RS-TOR or , and, a gel Acavello seat saver. Just wondered what you all think, it's really just to give me a bit of confidence and back up should he decide to go! Look forward to hearing your opinions - don't say get rid of him I love him even though he is a pain in the bum sometimes!! Thanks

If something like a seat saver or an additional thing to hang onto would help your confidence then absolutely - go for it. A neck strap or martingale strap might be a cheaper alternative - but if you have it in your head that these things would help then so be it.

Its always difficult to know without seeing exactly what he is doing - but a good trainer should be able to help both with techniques to manage his evasions and with your own riding style and posture to make it easier to sit to. That is a better longer term solution than an expensive bit of kit. But in the short term to help your confidence then why not?

Thank you for your replies. No I'm not in those areas horselady. Yes I agree more lessons is better in the long term, I just wanted something for the time being to give me more confidence.

I always ride with an RS Tor now after being dumped a couple of times by a stroppy cob. Its a bit like a seat belt, I hope I dont need it but also hope it will save me IF I do need it. I think it was about £40 but personally I think its worth it. Good luck

My big ID likes to throw in a buck, when excited, when being a pain in the bum!

I bought a acavello seat saver & RStor thinking they would give me confidence, more security in my seat.

Took him XC and we jumped down the steps rather enthusiastically and then launched up the other side, ending in a buck which I promptly exited and landed on the floor.

Seatsaver, did not keep me in the saddle and guess what, I wasn't holding the RStor (doh!).

So, went back to my instructor and we spent time on re-establishing my seat with lessons on the lunge, no stirrups, no hands and with eyes shut in walk, trot and canter.

Thank you Ponyclubmumz ! I Think I will get one but like Mahoganybay and others have said I'm definitely going to get a good instructor and work more on my seat!

I feel your pain. I assume your little NF shall be similar to my highland and packs a small but mighty punch.
What helped me was getting a good saddle with GOOD kneerolls and learning to grip! Have heard good stories about the RStor though, but I didn't feel my situation was that extreme!

I've found that it's nearly impossible to come off the front or the back of my easytrek saddle.

OP your chap sounds just like mine he is New forest too! I use an RS-tor which has saved me many times, and ALWAYS wear my Racesafe. Unfortunately neither worked in January when he dumped me from the top of a small bank and I too damaged my ribs. I have now bought myself an air jacket as the family were ready to send him to the glue factory! Hoping to get back on board late this week. I find the more work he has the better, however exercise in winter is not easy hence the explosion when it was the first time out in 6 weeks. I was considering a new saddle with better knee rolls but sadly cant afford the air jacket & saddle at the same time, so the saddle remains on the wish list.

Carlosmum yes I always wear a Racesafe now! he's got a short neck and when he canters he goes completely flat so if he decides to do something I have nowhere to go!! Saddle with better rolls is a good idea I might look into that as well. Yes I am 56 and my family are not impressed with my hobby! They would like me to pack it in but I still love it at the moment so want to keep going.
