I dont know what it is with Bear but he has been shod for almost 2 years now and he's always naughty having his back right foot done, he jumps around when having the shoe off and when the new shoe being nailed on, he's fine with the shoe being shaped with the smoke and having his foot up on the stand thing having it filed.

Does anyone elses horse play up with one foot?
He did get a smack off the farrier today for it cos theres no excuses for acting a prat.....
Dont worry he hit him on the shoulder and he had a rug on, he's tough as old boots.
In the end my OH had to hold him cos he's knows Im not strong enough

I end up hanging off the lead rope.. Literally!

He just makes me mad

And the farrier calls me a softy, but Im firm with all of them, I just dont have muscles

Alot of horses react like this to stiffness in the sacroiliac joint or in the hock joint. It is quite possible he is not being a prat. The he is infact feeling some discomfort.

Holding the foot lower may be an idea and seeing weather this helps..
Also, if your OH is available, get him to hold the horse.

Personally, To me it sounds like Sarcoiliac stiffness as he is happy for the leg to be bought forwards but not out to the side or back. There for If it was my own horse i would be very tempted to give him bute the day before to see if this will ease the stiffness.

have you had the foot invesitgated? Has he had previous pain in it? Seems very odd to just be that one foot..
How is he with day to day handling of it?

I bought him un broken, broke him in and then had him shod after a couple of months,
He's only 5, he's good as gold with me picking out his feet ect.
The farrier suggested I should try exercises to make him behave (new farrier, he's only done him 3 times) But he's good with me lol!

He's always loose and supple on the lunge.

loose and supple in motion is very very diffrent from maintaining a position for a period of time.

Only other thing i can suggest is you try getting under her and standing with his legs support as when removing shoes.

But BUT!!! this is very dangerous if he starts to mess around, as, no offense ment, but you probably wont be strong enough.

He doesn't get annoyed he just jumps around on 3 legs, I try and stand on the opposite side to stop him but I haven't a hope in hell lol!
Lou- Last year after he had a sore back I was doing leg exercises with him, holding it out/to the side and then pulling it forwards underneath him, and then the carrot stretches for the front end.
Last time the farrier came my friend was there as I was away and she had him in a bridle and he was good, plus she's got bigger muscles than me

I didnt have him in a bridle today but he had the lead rope round his nose.

thats what I meant

This suggest he is in pain. When does he do this as soon as its worked on or at a specific stage?
I suggest you mention it to your vet next time he's out.

Well then youve just sort of answered your own query..

You say hes not in any dicomfort.. If your sure 100% sure he is in no pain then im sorry but me and mr Pony would be having serious words...

Otherwise i would heed some of the oppinions on here.

Thanks guys, I know he knows he can take the pi$$ out of me the little bugger, I just wondered if anyone elses horse had a ''naughty foot'', like you get a good rein and not so good rein.

Maybe I should invest in 'Mr Blue Pipe'.

ifit's an old resolved pain thing..it may be reaction by proxy..so try Oxyshot to relax him next time..if he's still a bugger..get his sacroilliac checked out.....

My first Welsh A was a bit like this, and it was caused by pain in the back which did not show during normal activity, but which was aggravated by the farriers movement of the leg.
You also said he has an iffy leg, could that be causing any of the problem. Sorry, I don't which leg or what is wrong with it, just trying to think of anything.

Moke- He doesn't have, well as far as I know he doesn't have any problems with any of his legs, he prats about with the same leg.
He had his back checked about 6 weeks ago and all was well

I agree with a lot of the comments on here. I would say that your pony is exhibiting signs of discomfort - rather than being naughty.

I would ask your physio to visit again, explaining the problems you are having to see if they can shed any light on it.

My mare is an absolute cow when it comes to the farrier. She is 4, friend owned her from 4 months old, and then i bought her. She has only behaved for the farrier once in the whole time he's been doing her!!!

She's not shod but when she's trimmed the first leg is always fine, she's as good as gold, then the first back leg she can be good or she can be a moose trying to kick him, the wall, or an innocent bystander. This then continues onto the next back leg, then by the time he gets to the last front she tries to kneel down, barge him or anything she can do, she'll try.

It is not pain, it's patience. Her attention span is somewhat related to a gnats! As long as she's kept amused (haynet, scratches, salt lick, ear rub.....) it minimises her naughtyness! It's actually amazing our farrier keeps coming back!
