My 5 year old was diagnosed with Advanced Navicular disease in Dec last year. Both my vet and farrier recommended that I retire her. Naturally I took their advice and she is now a field ornament on permanent daily danillon. She has also had her shoes taken off and is trimmed 6 weekly. She has the odd 'footy day but having done alot of research can't help but wonder if retirement was the right decision :(

There might be a chance...http://rockleyfarm.blogspot.co.uk/ - do lots of reading on barefoot approaches - remedial shoeing can make horses sound, for a while, as can anti inflammatories of course, but they only slow the degeneration of many hoof conditions. Barefoot can be incredibly successful if done right, and you CAN replicate much of what Rockley Farm does, at home/your yard.

I'm not sure I would of retired her. I would of gone through the barefoot route first and then brought her back into work and see how you got on. Mine was diagnoised at 7, but was sound 7 months later.

Hmmmmn. I would have done bf rehab first. At 5 years old I would be very surprised if no improvement could be made. Was it none damage or soft tissue that the vet thought so bad? What was the MRI report saying the damage was?

What other treatments are you wishing you'd considered?

When you say Advanced Navicular - what tests were done to diagnose this and how does your mare differ from all the other horses with Navicular to warrant the diagnosis as Advanced or Disease (which is pretty much no longer used as a term)?

Thought you would like to know I have just got back from trimming and the last horse that I did was one that 9 ½ months ago was signed off due to ‘advanced Navicular’ the owner is now taking the horse back their place in France to ride in the hills as she is going so well and showing no signs of caudal pain in either front foot.
I also recommend looking at the Rockley farm site.
Plus thinking about NCT Nutrition, Condition, Trimming

Navicular in a 5 year old and a write off diagnosis????? Good grief, that's not any good.

I'm a barefoot trimmer based just south of Bristol, if you want an alternative view on your horse's future, get in contact I'd be happy to help you.
