A horse I know tends to stand in the stable resting a hind leg with its front foot out in front of him. I am worried that he has navicular.
He is totally sound, has been trotted up on a hard surface and lunged on a hard surface with no signs of lameness. He has equal feet and they are not upright or boxy. He is able to do lenghten strides and gained a 7 for them in a BD comp last week.
He feels 100% to ride both in the school and on the road but I am worried about his preffered way to stand in the stable. He does tend to have low heels so do you think that he could be standing like this as he bruises his heels or could it be a sign of something else ( ie back pain).
Help.

Agree with halfstep, Speak to your farrier about the pain and see if he can support the heels more. He can also do a simple test for navicular. Ask him to do this next time he shoes her.

I keep trotting him up and even on stones he is sound but I just cringe at the way he stands. He looks like he is shoving bedding under his foot.
I lost a horse to navicular so used to the symptoms but other than the resting position there is no other signs.
He has the farrier on thursday and I was going to ask him to shorthen the toes and get his heels up a little. He is currently in side clips on his front feet.

if hes in side clips then the toe will be pulled back more anyway.. Id suggest asking your farrier about putting longer shoes that are slightly set wider than usually to support the heel more.

I would speak to the farrier about getting him shod so that his heels are supported better. Sounds like heel pain to me.

I agree, my old boy had suspected Naicular and we had his heels raised (little heels bless him lol) and he was fine!
When you take them out, they normally say that they appear stiff or slightly uneven but with work that eases off!!
