Some of you may have read my previous thread when I found out that my horse had navicular and I wasn't too sure what to do

http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=558349

Since this thread, I have decided to go down the barefoot route and after almost two weeks of just turnout I am about to get back on and ride. I have been told by the vet just to gently walk and trot for the next two weeks on a soft surface.

My question is, do I put boots on her feet when I ride her or can you ride a barefoot horse on an arena surface gently without doing any damage? Sorry for the numpty esque question but I really don't have a clue about barefoot, navicular I know about now but barefoot I don't :D

And does any body have any useful lnks to websites re going barefoot and which boots should i use? :o

Thank you for any responses in advance

need to know the condition of the hooves to answer that and I'm very sorry I've not seen previous posts. Many nav are also LGL or worse.

Comfy unforced footsteps are your guide. I tend to put the nav's I do into a bucket boot and 1inch pads - at least to start.

Some school surfaces are actually really uncomfy

See how she feels.

If she doesn't feel happy - try the boots.

If she still doesn't feel right - try pads in the boots.

If she still doesn't feel right - she's not ready for the weight of a rider yet and needs to go to in-hand work instead.

If you are sensitive to what she is saying - it's very difficult to do any harm in a soft area....but obviously it's a bit difficult to say without seeing the hooves :).
