I haven't really had any experience with this, and don't know a great deal about helping the horse, other than the few basics.
However today I was riding a unfamiliar pony, it's due to be up for sale and need more work, that felt slightly unsound behind, so questioned the owner about this, as to whether it is just it normal movement as I am used to 16hh+, so rather strange being on something with such short paces. She replied that the pony has navicular and that the vet said it needs to be ridden through the lameness inorder to become sound. (I didn't do this as felt rather unsure about riding it whilst unsound)
What is your opinion on this? As i thought surely egg-bar/balance shoes would be more producive in helping improve soundness?
also posted in vetenary, but haven't had any replies, and thought i would get a better response here =].

It all depends on whether the horse has navicular disease or navicualar syndrome.
My mare has navicular syndrome and when she was going through the diagnosis we were told to try and ride through the lameness. We tried bute, egg bar shoes, steriods, navilox but nothing worked so we turned her away.
It all depends on the diagnosis and treatment so far.

I have a 11 year old gelding with navicular, he has had 2 cortisone/quarterzone (not sure which spelling) he is now sound. When he was first diagonised we worked him through for the first 20 minutes and then if he hadn't become sound we would leave him, at one point he was turned out for 2 months. He is now fine, he can do a little bit of jumping but mainly hacks/hunts

hope this helps

nav disese nav syndrome.. capish caposh they are the same thing.. navicular syndrome is the correct term for it as it is cause by a multitude of things.
Riding a horse through navicular is stupid.. navicular pain is usually cause by inflamation of the soft tissue around the distal sesimoid bone.
She was be lucky to sell a horse with Navicular.
If it was my horse it would have barshoes and pads or it was have heel wedges on, dependant on severity.

Would probably be also on a low dose of bute, And owul dprobably be turned away until sound.

Totally agree with you nailed, he is such a sweet little pony but as soon as they said told me about the navicular i thought they will be hard pushed to find a a home for him
i know i would be reluctant to buy a horse with it. Thank you for the replies guys, don't think i'll be exercising that one again!

Actually, yes, I do. itsmyparty. Have been told to ride my horse, as vet says if you have arthritis you dont sit in a chair and stagnate you get moving !
