Today I was talked into riding after a break of 2 1/2 years!!
It was a beautiful day and the horse was a gent.
Five minutes from home we turned around a corner and were slowly making our way-in single file-down the hill on the home stretch.
Chatting away about life and such when the next thing I hear is the sound of squealing brakes.
I look behind me to see some sort of pick up truck trying to stop. I have no idea what make the car was as he was so close I couldn't see badge....just bonnet, windscreen and a bald headed man with a look of sheer terror on his face.
He swerved away from us and into the path of an oncoming car...then he turned back at us!
I don't recall what happened next as I really thought that this was it so I closed my eyes and braced for impact and the moment that my horses legs would be taken from under him.
After what seemed ages I heard my friend screaming that it was a 30 mile an hour zone for a reason. I opened my eyes and realised that the bloody horse had saved our bacon!
He did not so much as flinch! He had kept moving forward and taken us out of the way of the truck and onto a verge.
Driver then hurled the usual crap about we shouldn't be there, we don't pay tax....and sped off!
We have witnesses and have to go to make a formal statement at the police station tomorrow, but in reality what can or will they do?

*we were lit up like a council house at Crimbo so not seeing us is a lame excuse!

I'm sure there are a few offences the police *could* get the driver on, but I suspect the question really should be 'what *would* the police do?'

Do you have the details of the other oncoming car driver as a witness to the trucks escapade?

So glad you are ok and horse wasn't injured.

In Kent (probably similar wherever you are) they would take it as an allegation of bad driving - they will not run anything without the registration of the vehicle concerned(unless there is another way of identifying the car and driver) and a witness - in addition to you.

If any of your witnesses are independent this will really help (not previously known to either party involved)

I would think if any prosecution was run likely to be careless/inconsiderate driving

How scary! The police should follow this up and at least have a word with the driver, especially if you have independent witnesses, now whether they will do so or not is an entirely different matter but all you can do is report it and see what happens.
