So confused. I have to leave for work at 8.30 and don't get back untill 7. My current yard is 5 min from home but no body is there when I go down at night so can be really creepy, the outside school needs sorting out as really unlevel and deep.
The other yard is 20 mins away but is brand new with indoor and outdoor school and member of staff there untill 10pm.
What one would you choose?

Just moved for nicer rather than nearer.
Mind it was the difference between everyday turnout in small groups on well managed fields and limited turnout in huge group on mudbath.

Living and working in London it takes over an hour to get to any yard from work - even the near ones so 20 mins still seems reasonable.
However I am on 5 day part livery which helps.
I get to work for 8am so I can leave at 4:30 and get some daylight.

Nicer! (In my case I was lucky enough that nicer is nearer!) It means that in my case that with people around, I'm never feeling *lonely* while doing my chores, someone to chat to and hack with....or school with later in the eve as there is an indoor school which is the BIGGEST boon. But if I had to choose distance over amenities and friendly atmosphere, I'd travel every day!

Nicer - if you're nearer but don't like it you won't want to go there so much - there's nothing more de-motivating than a horrible dark, lonely, cold yard with the wind whiping through it on a cold winters night and when you ride the school it is deep and uneven and nothing seems to go right and in the end your horse gets fed up and bucks you off and theres no one there to make you feel better.

Do I sound scarred?
Take heed!

I would pick the one that was better all round for the horse i.e. if the nearer one had rubbish school but brilliant turnout and the other one had great schools and no turnout, I would pick the first.

All things being equal, I would pick the one with the best facilities for me. Unless you are moving to the yard you asked about the other day, in which case I would rather put up with the deep school.

Yeah it is the same yard, why whats wrong with it?
Appreciate any info you have don't want to make wrong decision.
The toss up is that the nearer one I can get to mornings and evenings some days but with nicer one I would only manage once. Both yards have all year turnout but nicer yard will be more restricted.

Depends on what you want to do with your horse...
I moved to the "nicer" yard even though it was further as it had what i needed for my horse of course my needs. If you don't use that facilities then stay where you are but if you need a school etc then move.
Perhaps try looking for another yard just to put the other 2 in perspective.
Sometimes the grass is always greener and i have moved yards to somewhere i thought was better only to move back 2 weeks later!!!
Horses are an expensive hobby so you need to happy...if your unhappy and you can, then do something about it.

Thanks for the advice. I have decided to go with the nicer yard. My boy is only 5 and im bringing him on with the hope of competing in the future so I really need to go with the better facilities. Luckily for me two other people from my current yard have decided to come with me so that's even better.
