I was fiddling around in her paddock for ages - poo picking, moving the fence over, cleaning and filling her water trough - and I noticed that she was being driven crazy by the flies. Toddled off to get my fly spray, but as soon as I came back with it, Ellie decided there was no way it as going near her and started careering round the field. I did my normal trick of sitting down in the grass with my back to her, and sure enough, she is so inquisitive she soon came over. I stayed facing away from her as she put her head over my shoulder, and then the bloomin' dog came flying in, thinking it was all a big game. Ellie turned away and lashed out, and I saw her hoof pass my face with about six inches to spare

It freaked me out just a bit; I dont think I'd have lived to tell the tale had she got me, and after chucking the fly spray bottle at her and jumping over the gate, I had to take a few minutes to stop trembling

Don't think I'll be kneeling down in the grass again

Poor you, glad you are ok.
I generally trust mine, although not so far that I would sit in front of them

just in case.
I was closing the gate a couple of weeks ago and as I turned round to walk into the field I just saw a pair of legs coming towards me, for no apparent reason my mare leapt into the air off all fours and both barrelled me, fortunately she only got me with one leg although I still fainted and have a damaged muscle and can't straighten my arm

I haven't been kicked since I was 12 so it was a bit of a shock to be black and blue from wrist to shoulder !
I've been putting headcollars on and tying up to alter rugs and pick feet out now even the ones I've had forever.
I just think I am lucky that it wasn't much worse, certainly makes you think.

I am glad you weren't hurt - and thanks for posting this. It should be a reminder to us all not to take horses for granted - but I actually think we will all carry on doing what we do. When I stop to think of the risks I take, it is quite frightening; which is probably why we don't think about it.

I think we are all guilty of forgetting the dangers of horses, the more we are around them the worse we get!

And I would probably have done the same sitting down thing as you if I was there!

I am guilty of doing stupid things myself, normally resulting in kicks and things.

I read somewhere once that experience horse people are more likely to end up with serious injuries from horses as we tend to try and "deal" with the situation, where as a novice would just drop and run at the first sign of trouble!

Sometimes it does us good to take a step back and think about how dangerous our horses could be. And then we need to give them a big cuddle!!!!!

Totally agree MizElz - glad you posted that coz it is easy to forget that if a dog or cat got a bit boisterous round their owner, it's one thing but a horse doing the same is another. I think you did exactly the right thing to chuck the fly spray at her! I'd have chucked a few well chosen words as well lol! Charmer, glad you're ok! I got kicked in the back a few years back when I went to get my totally safe boy in. Didn't think about the rest of the neds in the field and the big black ID standing next to my boy obviously decided he was gonna give my boy a kick for having the cheek to be brought in but he misjudged it (I think) and caught me a beauty instead. Lovely hoof shaped bruise across my lower back but the biggest thing was the total shock at it happening at all! I thought I was VERY careful round horses but it just goes to show...

Ooooh so glad you're ok! I've had it happen to me bringing my horse out the field while my firend followed with a (chestnut) mare, the mare decided she didn't like the way my horse looked at her and lashed out. I had my back to her and just heard the noise at my ear, I turned around and my friend was properly white in the face and just said 'She just missed you head by inches' Gladly I didn't actually ee the foot but I'm alot more cautious now, not that I wear a hat

Glad your ok.... i had a near miss the other week i was bringing my horse out of the field and he was being really slow and i was dragging him in so he was slightly behind me something i will never do again.
A dog jumped out behind a wall and run at him from behind, so my horse just run forward knocking me over and trampleing over me at the same time.
Was all on cctv and very scary to watch his hoof has a inch away from landing on my head, dont know how i came away with scratches and cuts and lots of bruses.
Just shows u u need to watch yourself all the time even if u trust them completely they are animals at the end of the day
