I'm attempting to let the feathers grow out on my piebald cob. Does anyone have any tips of keeping them neat whilst they grow? Should I be trimming them up the back of the leg or just leave them until they grow long enough and start to look a bit less untidy!!! Previously I have had them either all clipped off or the clippers run up the back of the leg...don't really want to go for either of these options now we've got so far. Does the hair need thinning or anything? I'd be grateful of any advice! - thanks

I'd use pig oil & sulphur to keep hair & skin in good condition & then just let them grow. Apparently it can take 8 months for them to grow back completely.

Let nature grow them. I wouldnt touch them with a pair of scissors/clippers and use babyoil or pigoil to keep the mud from breaking the hairs off.

I grew my horse's features and he stopped getting mud fever and looked fantastic with his fleecy fluffy legs. It took a while to grow them, but it was worth it.

I am regretting trimming my girls, it was spur of the moment earlier this week, i adore feathers, but they were doing my nut in tbh, she had a touch of thrush and i was and still am treating with iodine and they were just getting in the way, thankfully they grow back.
As others have said, just let nature take its course

and the mud just falls off,(if you have mud)

thank you everyone! I have ordered some pig oil and sulphur today :-) hopefully this will help if the mud gets bad in the winter. how often and how should I be using this stuff?-Never had it before!? I cannot wait for them to grow! :-)

Megatek to encourage fast and healthy hair growth. Survivor detangler for when you want to comb out - it also conditions them - I use these products in summer and you get them from tailgator.co.uk.

From September to April I use pig oil and sulphur.

Don't attempt to trim them - they take 6 - 8 months to grow back completely and if you trim them, they won't look as nice long term.

If you want the huge PM I do on keeping hairy horses with full show condition hair, PM me and I will send it to you. It covers keeping mites off and how to have them white and ready for the show ring.
