HELP Does anyone have a solution to a neck hood rubbing the mane away. Last spring Sally whom I purchased in January lost a large patch of mane whilst wearing a neck hood which took all summer to grow back. This year I thought I would solve the problem by lining the hood with silky material but she is steadily loosing more mane until yesterday I was forced to remove the neck hood whilst there was still a thin amount of mane left. Now I will have a horse that will take a lot of grooming before riding and what if I need to clip her neck again (clipped earlier in the Autumn but has grown back to approx summer coat length. She is a shire X conn and has a very coarse type of mane.

How do you manage to keep yours clean seeing that you have a grey in your signature. She is turned out during the day and loves to roll in our nice red welsh soil.

The grey doesnt wear any rug at all- he's phobic.... extra fun!!
My bay doesnt wear a hood, a quick flick with a dandy brush and she's clean.

Thanks Do you put this under a turnout neck hood when you turn yours out ? & are they generous or a bit mean Sally is 16 HH and quite stocky but not completely "tank like"

Great fun during the winter me thinks !!

Sally loves getting the mud everywhere but hates me grooming it off !!

Mine rubs his head in the dirt and gets himself into a right mess, but I would rather spend a lifetime cleaning him then put a neckhood on ever again, they are really dangerous. I had a near miss with mine last week when it slippedover my coloured's head and he paniced, and Im sure Bossanova had a big problem with them also? x

i dont have a problem with mine, they are attached to the rugs & as i said fizz has no probs getting out her rug with it on.

shes on her 4th winter with that rug

I use a hood, it prevents me having to clip quite so often as it keeps his neck warm. must admit his inly rubs down by the withers so have had no experience

Whops I am using the wrong name. What I use clips on to my turnout rug and just goes around the neck not over her face and is designed for outdoor use.

hehe totally lost now,do you mean a turnout hood, clips on to the turnout to help keep them warm & dry?

if you put a lycra hood under it that can help stop rubbing

Yes sorry for not being clear it is a turnout neck hood which clips onto my turnout rug & was supplied with it as a set. Could I use a strech neck hood under it ? or would it be dangerous as some are saying as I would rather struggle with the mud than cause Sally any harm. Thanks to everyone for their comments & help

My Stretch hood goes over the ears only not down the face so there is no chance in to going over her eyes. They may be safer than the full face ones.

Personally, after my own experiences and other peoples, I would NOT use a stetchy hood, I think they are really dangerous. But I do use a neck rug which attatches to the turnout rug, these I have no problem with, because if they are attatched properly they wont come over the horse's head.

i have this problem with mine clipped her out and the coat on her neck gew back so fast so thought id get her a rug with neck cover on for next time i clipped her so i did ok for a few weeks but now that mane by her withers is almost non existent but dont want to tack neck cover off as shes had it on for a few months
