Why not a martingale? Hannah has a neck strap that is just the neck piece of a martingale with the bits that attach to the reins and girth removed. Is that wrong?

A martingale is not strong enough to support your grip of death moments...as they are not designed to take any strain...unlike stirrup leathers and breastplates which are both stronger...

Is that really true? Last time I saw WFP go XC he had what looked suspiciously like a martingale as Patches described as a neck strap.
Plus I have seen lots of eventers using running martingales XC and having grip of death moments but have not heard of any problems? Can't say it's an issue I've had with them either, and I used to have many moments of needing a handle on Twiggy.
Now I have a breastplate so this is all curiosity rather than me thinking I am about to die....

I use a stirrup leather. Would never use a martingale having seen some plum get dumped in a ditch out hunting after thinking theirs would hold them...
[/ QUOTE ]
I'd just like to state categorically that I was not 'that plum' and know about martingales from observing plums, not being them....
I have an ongoing relationship with neck straps though

Breastplates with martingale attachments are fine...I can't recall seeing many 'loose' martingales recently...but then I haven't been looking for them
Perhaps WFP and others don't exert quite the same 'grip of death' and off balance lurching that I do, so don't test them as fully?
I think you should resort to using a martingale and riding big courses in the name of research
Well in fairness, Hannah only uses hers to slip a finger under to keep her hands from rising to her earholes when Oliver is in canter. She has a nasty habit of raising her hands.
She never uses it to hold herself on his back with anyway.

Presumably with someone to video to ensure I don't lie about the results?
I dunno, I'm not a brilliant subject as my theory is that horses grew manes precisely so thee was always something to grab in an emergency...

A video would be good...especially if you could do slow motion? I agree regarding manes - never pull them too short near the withers...and my plaits are renowned for never coming out, even with the weight of a rhino hanging off them (ok, so I'm not quite rhino heavy so I exaggerate
Plaits are for dressage and SJ if you are feeling brave (or your groom is mean). XC is not for plaited horses. I refuse to go XC with a plaited horse, I need to be able to grab his mane!

If I were to plait your horse up for you, I could plait your fingers into the actual plait...so you'd never fall off again...

That would be great! And it would help me keep my pesky hands still too. Can't imagine why no-one has done it before. We could market it and sell it to fools for lots of money....

I find stirrup leathers are too thick if you want to just slip a finger under 'just in case'
I use either a breastplate or a martingale strap
[/ QUOTE ]
I was about to post exactly the same!
I bought myself a single neck strap because my breastplate at the time didn't seem to sit where I wanted it for 'grabbing' situations - it is about the thickness of a normal martingale but is just a plain strap of leather that buckles together. I honestly don't think I would have the strength to hold on tight enough or long enough in that kind of situation to snap it... it is pretty strong.

'Slip a finger under'?! Some of us routinely go for the 'both hands clenched til our knuckles shine white' approach.
And that's just in walk.

[ QUOTE ]
you can of course buy straps which go from d ring to d ring on the front of your saddle which are good.
[/ QUOTE ]
Are they not called 'balance straps'. I find the trouble with them is that they are positioned in such a way that your body is more likely to pivot off the horse...so something further up the neck is better.
