And I must admit I was sort of glad he stood up to him. Cookie does nothing but pester Ned, he nips him, squeals at him and squares up to him! Poor Ned just reached the end of his tether.

Cookie stood in front of him, threatening to rear and bite, when Ned all of a sudden reared full height and wrapped his front legs around Cookies neck and dragged him off his hooves, onto the ground! He gave him a good bite, while kneeling on his neck, then let him up and tried to walk away. Cookie got up and looked a little shocked that Ned had actually stood up to him.

I did check Cookie over for cuts and sore bits, but he's a tough one and doesn't seem to be hurt! I'm going to check him again shortly, as adrenaline might have been hiding something.

Please boys, no more vets bills!!

Hoping to get Cookie cut soon, but it's just so expensive :( I can see why people don't often bother.

We had two Shetlands cut 3 month apart frm each other at 4 years old, it's disgusting how much it cost! The ne we've kept is brilliant, but still stands up to my mare , a flick of his ears and she backs away from any food, I think it's just Shetlands

I think compared with many veterinary treatments castration is not that expensive, the vet needs to use a fair amount of sedation, antibiotics are given as routine that cost cannot be avoided, it is not a 5 minute job they have to make sure the procedure is completed safely, the last time I saw one done the vet was here for at least an hour, it can be done at home so saves traveling expenses, for under £200 it seems like a bargain in real terms.

Pleased Ned is standing up for himself, maybe Cookie will back off now and give him some peace.

I need to call the vet actually and give him an update on Ned, so I'll ask for prices. When my friend had him, she was quoted £350-ish by her vet and that was when he was around 2yrs. He's coming up for 4, so I don't know if age will change things.

And yes! I felt bad for Cookie, but he deserved it!

I had Towcester Equine clinic castrate my colt and it wasnt as expensive as I thought it would be - I was very surprised!

Definitely get him cut.
It's the responsible things to do and should tone down his attitude!

Call around for best prices.
Taking them ti the clinic is cheaper as they obviously charge call out and usually a premium for bringing equipment with them.
(X rayer, scanner etc, although for this I know it not needed)

But if you don't have transport and have to pay it can be costly!

My vets occasionally do special offers for castration, which brings it down to £150 +VAT so might be worth keeping eye out, or seeing if your vets plan to do anything like that in the near future.

Good boy Ned! Put the little monster in his place! Bet Cookie is proper sulking now! :D

Def ring aroung for quotes for Cookie-nuts-off! Think it was about 220 for my little boy, but that included 2 nights at vet's & he was totally knocked out for it, not standing. (vet was being extra cautious as he'd had a tough start!)

Only one vet would do a 4 year old at home, and knocked both out cos they are so small it's easier access to lay down, one of ours wouldn't let him inject for sedation so it cost two visits , the Normal one visit one was 350 and the other is 450 for two visits and extra sedation. Told mum not get colts for the geldings and purchase prices she could of had a normal sized hacking horse ......

Thinking back, it would have been best to get a gelding, but I needed something right then and there, I couldn't afford the time.
Friend needed to get rid of Cookie, but didn't want to sell a 3yr old shetland stallion, especially since she loves him a lot. Who knows where he could end up. She knows I wouldn't breed from him, but someone else might and add another useless pony to the world.
She didn't even want him in the first place! If I remember rightly, he was dumped on her when she bought her old horse.

Oh! Poor Cookie Monster wasn't as unharmed as I first thought. They must have had another scrap after I left, because he had a cut lip :( Doesn't seem too bad and it's his own bloomin' fault.

It's not really his fault, it's his hormones:( You need to get him done asap or fence a pen off for him so he can't get to Ned. I'm going to have to separate mine up for a while as the girls have come into season and the boys are playing games that are too rough for my poor old 30 yo boy.

I agree with Jemima, it's not really fair on either of them to leave it as it is if they're beating seven bells out of each other :(

My two did this (one colt one gelding) and once it started getting out of hand it really escalated fast

Dont mean to scare you Chan!

This was the first time they've properly scrapped since they were put together. I hope it was a one off, (doubt it, but one can hope!) I simply can't afford to do anything about it yet. I think they just need something to do, which also isn't easy. I'm soooo hoping the field dries out soon so I can start long lining Cookie again. He's always much better after he's done something.

I don't think you realise how quickly things can escalate - I would either be getting him done ASAP or fencing him off - it isn't fair on either of them to be fenced in together because you can't afford him gelding.

you do need to be a bit careful given the size difference, I know Enfys had a pretty scary story so keeps her minis separate.

Actually I do.

I don't know if you have seen any of my older threads, but there is no keeping Ned separated. He'll just jump back and forth.
Also, I am going to get him done ASAP - as soon as possible - it's not possible yet.

But it's not Ned you need to keep separated, it's Cookie. If Cookie starts a fight and Ned is in with him although Ned is faster he can't get any peace. If Cookie is fenced in and Ned has jumped in with him Ned can jump out and disappear out of harm's way.

My poor old boy was attacked by another horse and ended up with hundreds of bite marks and a serious crushing bite wound on his neck which got badly infected. His aggressor was larger than him but it's reckoned the only thing that saved the old boy was jumping out. If there's any way you can pen Cookie in I'd do it, just to try to be on the safe side.

See if you can borrow a two handed post knocker and someone to help you use it to bash the posts in - makes life so much easier

Ah, unless of course they are electric fence posts *looks embarrassed* then a post knocker would make a right mess of them.
