NED, benefits and costs?

I've found my filly on NED and was wondering if it is worthwhile me associating myself with her. It costs 1 'point' I think it said but how much is this? Has anyone on here associated themselves with their horses? What exactly does associating yourself with your horse do?
Sorry for the questions but hopefully someone might have first hand experience rather than FAQ's......
