I'm just so frustrated! We were just beginning to get out and about again.

I don't know what happened, but I'm thinking he stepped on something, as his frog just doesn't look right and there's heat coming from the frog/heel area. Vet is coming on monday and farrier just after Xmas. :(

Miserable weather, miserable ponies and miserable me!!! I want to cry.

Perfect abscess weather and ground conditions, id poultice it, one of mine was like this a few weeks ago, poulticed it wet 3 days and it drew gunk, dry poultice for 2 days, turned out everyday in a boot then hit it with stockholm tar spray. He was right as rain in a week, farrier was out a few days ago and trimmed said he was fine now. Heres hoping ots something similar

Thanks everyone!
I didn't manage to get a poultice on, as today has just been unbelievable.

Firstly we took Annie to the vets to have her PTS, but thankfully she came back alive and is with us for a little longer.
I then go to the field and find the horses have trashed the rugs, so I have to go and waste £50 on another!! I then had to spend ages changing around fencing because I noticed a hole in the hedge and by then it was almost dark
:( huff. Oh well, vets tomorrow.

I'd get the farrier to come before you spend loads of money on a vet bill? I had a £150 bill for an abscess last year! when the farrier would have come out for free or a lot less!!

SOoooo!

The vet has been.

It is an abscess, which is good and bad news.

Good news - I know what it is and how to treat it. Also, because it wasn't me who directly broke him, I was so paranoid that it was me that hurt him.

Bad news - he's in a field. A muddy one! It will be the biggest pain in the bum to keep it clean and dry.

Chan get some gorilla duct tape to go over the normal duct tape.....Its very, very strong as in will take your skin off strong. its what we use hen lami appy gets an abcess so he can still out once its burst.

glad its an abcess

Brilliant but an expensive abscess. I feel your pain. My boy had one last yr. he jumped if of his shelter. So I had to have him out in mud with it on and it was fine. Loads of duct tape and it stayed on fine. It got reinfected a couple of weeks later because i didn't pack the hole enough. So when he goes out make sure you fill the hole well. Stokeholme tar will help

Maybe its a bruised sole, my horse has had two in six weeks and has been on box rest of 8 days for each time.

Mine was diagnosed with bruise about 10 days ago. Improved, shoe back on but still needing 2 bute day. Trouble was I clipped her (after 4 months off with respiratory virus, her not me) & mentioned the 'W' word. Canny mare.......
